Hopefully this thread won't get locked. I am an EFL teacher looking for work in Iraq. While I would of course take a teaching job there, I would also consider almost any position taking into consideration the exact location. Safe or unsafe, I feel if the pay is large, it is worth the risk to work there for 6 to 12 months. Can anyone please provide me with some emails or good websites that could lead me in the right direction to find a job? Please don't lock this. Feel free to PM me.

I hear there are many "foreign fighters" in Iraq. Perhaps they could do with some "English for International Communications" skills. Or other ESP instruction. Very Happy

Seriously though, IMHO you'd have to be really REALLY desperate for cash (or soldier-of-fortune-like thrills) to take a job in Iraq at the moment.

That having been said, I did speak to a guy next to me on a flight who was driving a truck in Iraq for big bucks. He said he felt it was pretty safe since he spent 95% of his time on military bases. But that other 5% was no fun at all!

BTW, here's the "minimum requirements" from the Blackwater site:

Must be willing and able to deploy overseas for at least 6 months.
* Must be a U.S. Citizen, proof of citizenship required (copy of Blue Tourist Passport)
* Must be able to pass a general health physical.
* Must be able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
* Weight must be proportionate to height.
* Must be able to pass a physical fitness test.
* Must present and maintain a neat and clean appearance.
* No history of major illness or mental disorder.
* Experience must be verifiable, submit a DD-214 or other paperwork that can be
independently verified.
* Must have an Honorable Discharge.
* Must possess good written and verbal communications skills in English.
* No felony or violent crime convictions (NO WAIVERS).
* No personal bankruptcy or outstanding credit deliquency within seven years.
* No DUI or illegal drug use history within seven years.
* No spouse abuse or domestic violence conviction.

Sounds like your average stuff for EFL teachers.

Sabis is there, but there are no job openings on that site. Actually the only jobs that I saw were for Minnesota!!

If you're serious about a job teaching in a danger zone, have you looked at the American University of Kabul. They offer a 1 year contract, starting asap.

You could always join the US military. The pay is good and they give you a gun. And I've met lots of US soliders that could use basic English classes. Very Happy

How much would you work for exactly? You say you would go anywhere if the pay was good enough, right?

I'm thinking of putting some people on the ground there and advertising English classes as I believe there's a market, but have had a hiatus in recruitment for that specific region, which I cannot understand as it is a most challenging location with lots of history, sunshine and significant career development opportunities. There is also a lot of cultural diversity.

I would offer a good salary by TEFL standards, life-insurance, quite decent accommodation and a long contract, i.e. 5 years. I would also personally notify relatives in case of anything serious happening. I would, of course have the injured person or, in a worst-case scanario, the body shipp
