Hey!
I got an offer from Liuzhou Experimental Senior Middle School. Does anyone as any kind of info about this school or the city of Liuzhou?
I'm actually really interested in going to Guangxi province. What are the best spots, the best schools? I'm a newbie, I need advice! Rolling Eyes

Guilin's the best city, due to its closeness to Yangshuo, and relative proximity to Longsheng and its spectacular rice terraces.
Nanning, the capital, is a go-ahead place, and seems to pay better than most provincial cities. Beihai has a reasonable beach and good seafood.
Liuzhou is famous for its coffins: honestly. A new highway links it to Guilin.
Guangxi is interesting. You'll see traditional minority lifestyles being played out , while still having modestly decadent Western lifestyles available in the cities.

Spent 15 months in Guangxi province and loved it.
The food is good and spicy, weather is great in the Winter (warm and blue skies) but really hot and humid come April or May; bring light clothes for the summers or buy them there.
It is sub-tropical so they have a rainy season and boy does it rain! Every afternoon for about 8 weeks where we were, there was a huge thunderstorm and torrential rain for a couple of hours before it cleared up. Awesome!
Fruit and produce is abundant and cheap to buy in the markets provided you have a strong stomach and there are lots of cool places to visit; Guilin, Yangshou, Guiping, Beihai, Longsheng, Nanning and Detian to name but a few. Living is cheap, people are friendly, food is good and the weather makes a welcome break from Canadian winters.
I'm close to Shanghai right now and don't like it anywhere near as much.

Yamahuh must have struck it lucky. My two winters in Guilin were grey and cold. Even had some snow one year. He's right about summer. Oh, and when it rains............!

yup, Guangxi is a nice place. Liuzhou is a bit less interesting than the other cities named above though.

Still, Liuzhou is about 2 hours away from Guilin by express bus, so it's easy to get to those places like Yangshuo or Longsheng in a few hours. Plus in Liuzhou you're closer to Nanning and Beihai as well (2 and 2.5 hours respectively).

Liuzhou also has a direct train connection to Beijing btw. Is really handy when making reservations for the T6/T5 to Beijing. Much harder (more expensive) to do this from Guilin for instance, on that particular train.
Liuzhou is well connected to other places too, but as a town it's a bit drab. Lots of industry, construction and business going on, whereas in other cities there's also a touristic interest. My girlfriend's father works there btw. So that's why I've been there a few times. I'd rather work in one of the other cities in Guangxi though.

While Guangxi as a province is beautiful I doubt Liuzhou city is. I was there many years ago and found it a dump. I know, though, that the town has in the meantime undergone major changes: during my last visit a whole section of tenement buildings were being demolished (one km along a road near the station). But making a new Liuzhou doesn't necessarily mean transforming it into a Paris of SW China...
