Changed it again. Like how you need to change countries, because you can't cut it in Japan. I understand....if GEOS is as good as you can get...Abaiyo!

Using a knife and fork is probably way harder than using chopsticks, eh? Got that two hand coordination thing going on. I actually prefer to use chopsticks at home, because it leaves the other hand free for, um, other stuff. Like reading.

And kanji aren't so hard. Students always seem surprised if I can read their name tags. I've learned over 500 now in the last year, and all I do is look at the flashcards which I'm sitting at traffic lights. Marvellous things, those Tuttle flashcards. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Right, canuck. That's why I and everybody else are here...to prove we can cut it.

Cultural experiences are a dime a dozen. Variety? Overrated.

That's why it's great to stay in one place. Why go somewhere else? Japan has it all.

Plus, if you've cut it, you can look in the mirror and say, "I'm the man. Well...second to canuck." Rolling Eyes

1. Don't you have to know how to speak Japanese?

That one gets me all the time!!! If I say I am learning, they look at me like I am crazy and say, "I heard it was hard!". If I say I speak and understand a little, they automatically ask me to say something. If I tell them I'm not supposed to use Japanese in class, they ask "well how the hell do you plan on communicating?"

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=come%20back

come back
1. To return to or regain past success after a period of misfortune.
2. To retort; reply: came back with a sharp riposte.
3. To recur to the memory: It's all coming back to me now.

Wrong dub? Rolling Eyes 'tard. Next...

Forgive me if I am wrong all mighty Mr.Canuck but when you preceed "come back" with an adjective such as NICE, should not you use the NOUN ===> COMEBACK

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=comeback

Im not at all edumacated verily well but I believe ADJECTIVES preceed NOUNS and ADVERBS preceed VERBS

* NICE COMEBACK
* NICELY CAME BACK ( this doesnt really sound good, maybe thats why
you got confused)

Maybe Canuck meant "Nice. Come back". He missed out the punctuation mark but perhaps he really will miss mrjohndub.

So we're going to play this game, aren't we? Let's try a random sample.

Just curious here. I've been reading alot lately about how ESL is a dead end job here in Japan. How we are over here because we cant "make it" back home.

Now if someone stays at NOVA for like 10 years even I might form a few conclusions about that person but my question is this...

I have a friend in Canada. ____Works a 9-5 job plus a hell of a lot of OT as a purchaser for a hardwood flooring company. He's been there for 8 years. He actually took the job from me when I first came to Japan for the first time. He worked his ass off, made his way up the ladder. He pulls in about 3,500$ a month BEFORE taxes. No one in Canada would ever consider calling my friend a loser or unambitious.

I'm here in Japan working for a small Canadian owned school. We are pretty unique in that all of us are basically on contract to a large engineering firm here in Japan. Basically, though my boss is the "eikaiwa" owner and not the Japanese company, I make more than my friend in Canada AFTER my taxes are paid. I work a 30 hour week. OT is optional.

So.. are people in Japan teaching English who are not in universities or working for BOE's loosers or unambitious? I know quite a few people who have better lives here than their friends back home and have the advantage of living in another country, and yet somehow there is this idea out there that we are rejects from NA, Aus or New Zealand. I dont get it.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Japanese/Foreigners who call us rejects or say that we can't make it back home and that's why we are here are simply jealous. They think we make this money just "speaking" English.

Please don't respond with a huge list of costs comparing Japan and Canada and thats why my friend has it better. I pay less rent than my friend. I do not require a car. All my transportation and even my lunches are paid for by my company. Taxes are much less here than in Canada. Yes I know... a steak costs and arm and a leg here Very Happy I dont have to eat one everyday.
