Hi guys,

I am thinking about going with Nova(was accepted for an interview) but I am just wondering if you guys know if Nova will pay for my flight over to Japan or not. Getting over will be very expensive for me (over $3000 Canadian) so I am trying to find a school or recruiter that will fly me over as well as offer the other benefits I want in order to save money such as accomodation and health care.

I know some schools have a bonus thing at the end that might cover your flight, but I really don't have the money to pay for the flight AND have some start up money to get over there.

You should definitely be able to find a cheaper flight than that. I flew over from New York (with a one week stop over in Vancouver) for $1200 US. I don't think NOVA pays your way over, but they might have some kind of hook up with a airline or travel agency, and could get you discounted tickets. GEOS did for me.

NOVA doesnt pay airfares to Japan, they wont even pay your travel costs to attend an interview in Canada. Expect some upfront travel and hotel costs.

You have to complete a year contract to get a completion bonus (90% of teachers dont finish a year) and even then its not guaranteed. Just another carrot to entice you to stay the course.

I would not think of coming to Japan with less than a return plane ticket and at least $3000 in your pocket. You can borrow money from NOVA but its a loan and they want it back. It comes out of your initial probation salary, leaving you very little left over.

Yes I would at least come with 500,000 yen. I came to Japan last year under Interac and there were so many hidden costs I had to pay. Especially when it comes to housing! Intercrap was willing to loan me money but I refused to owe a shit company money. Thank god I refused. Working with them for some months made me realise that they are crooks! Anyway, good luck!

Hah!! That's the best one I've heard all day. NOVA won't even pay to replace the soap or papertowels in the bathroom! Good luck on getting that flight paid for. A ticket should not cost $3000 unless you are coming from the moon. I came from Toronto which is probably almost as far and it cost about $1100 or so. That's the price for a one-way ticket.

Soap and papertowel expenses are personal living expenses. What company would pay to replace them? If the toaster oven in your apartment breaks down or the plates and cooking utensils in your NOVA apartment's kitchen are fairly worn they'll usually replace them. Other than the fact that they charge high rents, NOVA is usually pretty good about their apartments.

NOVA doesn't pay for your ticket to Japan. That's a fact. Saying something like what's quoted above doesn't help anyone.

You need to research more. There is no way you have to pay $3000. Get a one year open ticket. Simple. It would probably be anywhere between $800 and $1400 Canadian. You're not going to get a completion bonus at NOVA.

I think newbies have to get over this idea that they are highly paid expats being flown in specially and having the red carpet treatment laid on by their employers because they can speak English and just because NOVA is a huge company it has bottomless pockets. Believe it or not, NOVA is a big corporate company but its swimming in red ink in Japan (3 billion yen loss last year or about 30 million dollars) and doesnt even let staff take stationery home and it recycles photocopy paper used in internal memos. It will cut corners whereever it can.

Its not a good idea to assume that an employer will simply pay you a bonus for completing a contract regardless of whether or not you actually produce any tangible benefit to the company let alone foot the bill for flying out 4000 employees every year.

Luckyloser, I think Hoser was referring to the supplies at the school's bathroom, although I'm not completely sure.

The days of being in demand are long since gone. If you don't have the travel and initial set-up costs to get to Japan, someone right behind you will. Like someone suggested, you'll need about 400 000 if you don't want to borrow money plus the airfare on top of that.

If you want to just save money, stay in your home country, get a temp job and live like a student. Saving money as an entry level conversational teacher is easy (50k - 80k a month) but the lifestyle is far from glamourous.

Yes of course I am -_-

Expecting them to buy my own soap is even further out there than expecting them to buy my plane ticket.

I'm not sure how it works north of the border, but in the states Nova uses a travel agency for group flights (cctravel.com, then click on 'nova travelers').
Depending on where you are leaving from, the price is between $600-$900 USD. If you can get to the west coast region (la, san fran, vegas, salt lake) it's about $650. Check out southwest or frontier airlines for cheap flights to the west coast. My girlfriend and I are leaving from Denver in august, taking a $50 flight to vegas so we can get in the lowest price bracket with cctravel.

Nova will pay for your transportation from Narita to wherever you are placed, and will ship two bags.

You are officially considered to be working when you arrive in the country and this is considered a relocation cost and they will pay 'transportation' when you commute to work.

At Narita there is I believe a courier service where you can get your bags shipped all over the country by courier rather than try and carry them yourself through Tokyo traffic and on the trains.

Haha. Seems like you're probably right. Guess I owe you an apology, Hoser. Another time, maybe.

Welcome to the real world. There are thousands of people here who have managed to do exactly that.

BTW, the JET Program pays for your flight to and from Japan. Look it up.
