Using a knife and fork is probably way harder than using chopsticks, eh? Got that two hand coordination thing going on. I actually prefer to use chopsticks at home, because it leaves the other hand free for, um, other stuff. Like reading.
And kanji aren't so hard. Students always seem surprised if I can read their name tags. I've learned over 500 now in the last year, and all I do is look at the flashcards which I'm sitting at traffic lights. Marvellous things, those Tuttle flashcards. Couldn't recommend them highly enough. |

Cultural experiences are a dime a dozen. Variety? Overrated.
That's why it's great to stay in one place. Why go somewhere else? Japan has it all.

That one gets me all the time!!! If I say I am learning, they look at me like I am crazy and say, "I heard it was hard!". If I say I speak and understand a little, they automatically ask me to say something. If I tell them I'm not supposed to use Japanese in class, they ask "well how the hell do you plan on communicating?" |

Forgive me if I am wrong all mighty Mr.Canuck but when you preceed "come back" with an adjective such as NICE, should not you use the NOUN ===> COMEBACK

Im not at all edumacated verily well but I believe ADJECTIVES preceed NOUNS and ADVERBS preceed VERBS

Basically, though my boss is the "eikaiwa" owner and not the Japanese company, I make more than my friend in Canada AFTER my taxes are paid. I work a 30 hour week. OT is optional.
So.. are people in Japan teaching English who are not in universities or working for BOE's loosers or unambitious? I know quite a few people who have better lives here than their friends back home and have the advantage of living in another country, and yet somehow there is this idea out there that we are rejects from NA, Aus or New Zealand. I dont get it.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the Japanese/Foreigners who call us rejects or say that we can't make it back home and that's why we are here are simply jealous. They think we make this money just "speaking" English.
Please don't respond with a huge list of costs comparing Japan and Canada and thats why my friend has it better. I pay less rent than my friend. I do not require a car. All my transportation and even my lunches are paid for by my company. Taxes are much less here than in Canada. Yes I know... a steak costs and arm and a leg here  I dont have to eat one everyday. |
