Hi everyone,
I'm researching programs that combine ESL and Office Administration/Assistant skills. Has anyone come across a program like this in Canada or the States?
Also, for those teaching overseas, have you had students approach you about programs such as these? I'm presently building a survey instrument to determine if it is worthwhile for my institution to create such a program.
Thanks for your help,

The closest thing I can think of is a short term internship program we run that has most focus on EFL teaching but also incorporates some language school administrative work, primarily in student records and new student enrollment. I don't think that's exactly what you mean though? On Office Administration/Assistant Skills, do you mean general or specific to education departments/schools? |

Are you talking about university programmes (with a programme goal of turning out people who run private language schools)? If so then I think the closest thing would be a double major in linguistics and business administration.
Or people could take a (three or four year) business degree and then do ESL teaching as an 'add-on' qualification (I mean do a year long diploma or certificate in TESL). There could be joint programmes already set up,I haven't seen anything like it though, but I HAVE seen similar things for other areas (York University has a joint programme with Centential College- both institutions are in Toronto- where you do a three year English degree at the same time as doing the one-year 'post graduate' certificate in Publishing at Centential- it really isn't post praduate at that point at all and so after four years have both, giving graduates skills that make them employable- in a field which has very limited prospects in Canada).
The exact same thing could be done with business degree and TESL certificate but it would probably work out better to split the business degree into a double minor three year (aka 'ordinary') degree (I'm thinking English and Business, because so many employers overseas ask for English degrees- probably partly because that's what the students want).
You could also do the split in the other direction, and have a three year degree in linguistics (but organize a specific path within the Linguistics department soas to have the students take every course in a TESL Certificate) with English courses suggested as 'electives' (at University of Toronto, electives can be in any subject area- there is no breadth requirement as there is at York, and so students could take a four course minor in English just in their electives) concurrently with a post graduate certificate in Business Admin (or marketing) from a college (which is, I'm guessing the type of programme you're trying to set up).
I guess I'm assuming you're Canadian (because you called it 'the States' and listed Canada first). |

One of my former co-workers is attending MIIS (Monterrey Institute of Int'l Studies) to pursue a Masters degree in TESOL with a specialization in LPA... Language Program Administration. Essentially, the LPA component teaches one how to operate a language school. Is that what you're looking for? |

Thanks for your replies. I was looking more for programs that offer vocational training (how to run an office, type letters, file, etc.) in coordination with ESL courses.

Hi there,
Are you meaning a program in which an ESL/EFL learner could study English with a specialization in office administration? |
