Hello all, Nugget here is a newly registered user on this very handy forum. Would be fantastic if i could get some feedback!

Got an interview with AEON this coming weekend and heres a few things i thought might be good to present as my 5min demo:

General advice seems to be to make it fun, simple, interactive and engaging. So, i thought it would be good to play some conversation games during my 5 mins that would act as maybe a warm-up activity in the context of my 30min lesson plan.

Possible games i thought of include offering out candy to fellow applicants acting as students. Then those students have to tell the rest things about themselves depending on how many sweets they took...or maybe i hold up picture cards of different topics (food, countries) and they have to say things related to the topic (more sweets taken = more things to name).

What do you guys think? Would such an activity be appropriate or be what the interviewers have in mind? Or would a more complex task be better to showcase myself in those vital 5mins?

I think such games allow me to portray enthusiasm and energy while letting the students talk and be engaged in a fun english-learning activity...but then what do i know, im jus a newbie!

Nugget,
designing an activity that will get students participating is a good idea. Don't lose that. Just make sure it seems like an actual non-native English speaker (probably low-level) can do your lesson. Other than that, be encouraging, confident, and generous with the praise.

I did the AEON interview and my lesson plan bombed, bc although they said " group interview ", I was expecting at LEAST 10 people in the room...only to get there and find 3 ( me and 2 guys ) as the applicants. So, learning from MY mistake, do the following :

1) Make sure that your lesson plan at least is compatible with small numbers or large numbers in a group ( judging from the 5-minute mark ) that you have.

MINE bombed bc although it was simple, introductory etc, there were only 2 participants which cut the lesson plan by 2 mins, bc get this, THEY ACTUALLY TIME YOU on a timer. I saw the lady click on a white timer.

2) Be enthusiastic, energetic and VISUAL

- Use the board a lot
- Use whatever you have prepared ( visuals, props, graphics )
- The Japanese students rely a lot on artistic props and you will see this in classes etc ( even for Junior and Senior High ).

3) Your lesson plan is good.

- But scrap out the candy and use another form of incentive.
- Be careful about the level of language - try not to teach grammar lessons too much bc remember that these students will have very basic grasp of the English language.

4) Other ideas in lesson plans.

- " Who's who " in celebrities and pop culture icons.
- Foods in your culture
- Short, fun interesting skits that would get students to converse
