Hi Johnner,
It's exactly like you said, there are no reliable recruiting companies that hire teachers for Japan. You get mostly recruiters for other countries but not Japan. So for instance Japan is not like in Korea or China where most of the hiring is done through recruiting. Because this is the case I would also point out that getting a subscription to a job list isn't practical nor is paying someone to send you job offers. The best jobs in Japan can only be "gotten" through word of mouth. That is obviously the case in every country but more so in Japan than anywhere else.
Most people go to Japan through one of the big four or a mom and pop eikawa. The jobs which are geared for first timers are usually the worst though, but beggars can't be choosers. BOL to you.
