If you are from SoCal, and are considering Heilijilgongxyquriahjiek;a (however the heck you spell it!), then those bitter cold winters up there may send you packing. SoCal also doesn't suffer such extreme heat/humidity as many places here in the summer, unless you are farther inland. So, climate may be a big influence for you. To date, we've had a good late Spring/early Summer here in Suzhou, but my sinuses have been acting up a LOT these days!

Yeah, I went to university in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (infamously referred to as Winterpeg, Minusnowba) for 3yrs. I'll never forget the time it was -58C and they issued a cold warning on the news (which means, don't go outside or your skin will freeze instantly). I thought I was going to die. Also, it's the windiest city in North America (much much windier than Chicago, yeah) so now they're using windmills to generate electricity and such. It sounds like these places are really similar..and I've heard that Manitoba and Siberia have the most extreme (and similar) climates on earth. Razz Anyway, I think I know what to expect and how to prepare accordingly if I go there (at least as far as climate goes). How are the insects though? That was the worst part of living in Winnipeg. The mosquitos and black horse and deer flies are everywhere because of the huge lake which is just north of the city. I see that Daqing has what look like small lakes surrounding the city, so I'm just wondering.....

What types of insects are really bad in China? I've heard about flying roaches that bite in Taiwan. Are they on the mainland as well?

Suzhou is a good sized city with "foreigner" amenities, and the foreign presence isn't overwhelming as long as you steer clear of the places along Shiquan jie and a few other bars - alchohol attracts foreigners. Anytime you need to feel "back home" just drop in to Shiquan jie, its rife with expats, and all manner of bars (many sleazy) that cater to them. Its also a charming, tree lined street and has some nice shops and restaurants. There are lots of industrial parks on the edges of the city that seem to be self-contained and I guess thats where a lot of the foreigners congregate. Best of all, its one hour from either Shanghai or Nanjing.

Xiamen is really cool, and it has everything you will need but not a lot of foreigners, plus the weather is pretty warm and balmy, and the locals are friendly. Its a small city, not at all crowded and not rundown either.

Suzhou seems nice indeed (from what I can gleam of it online anyway).
I just wonder if I should take a job in an isolated place like Northeast China (obviously for the money I can save) or wait for something better to present itself - assuming it will. Isn't the peak for ESL jobs in September?

Also, I have a good offer in Benxi, but it looks really polluted. Has anyone been there? What's it like?

Gorm there isn't a Chinese city that does not have air pollution and water pollution. Some bad, some worse, none good.

There is no good, bad and ugly. It is all bad and ugly.

Those who say this city is better than that city are fooling only themselves so that their decision does not appear so lame to themselves.

Chose based upon salary or weather, it doesn't matter because your first job and city will be like an armpit until you acclimate, assuming you do.

I will be really interested in which city you choose. My choice for you would definitely be Nangchung.
