Altia Central is breaking the law, Jawful. On the surface it may look like a better job than eikaiwa, but the reality is that you're being ripped off every month. ALT jobs should be direct with the school or BOE.

Read about it here:

Well, I accepted the ALT job early last week, and met with the BOE last Thursday. Then, over the weekend, the eikaiwa job contacted me and turned me down, so it was for the best that I went with the ALT.

I thought I'd have gotten some training, but instead they had me start in the school this week. My supervisor was with me for two days, Monday and Tuesday, offering advice and watching the classes. The company handling my apartment couldn't meet with me until Tuesday so they put me in a hotel for 2 days. This part was rather inconvenient.

I would have preferred time to move in, look around, then maybe start the following week or something. But anyway, I have been in the schools for 4 days now and it's been pretty good. Some students really try hard to communicate and that makes it a lot more enjoyable, especially outside of class. As I speak very little Japanese, communication skills are built on both ends learning to deal without words. Plus I have my Nintendo DS lite with me at all times with the Japanese-English dictionary to get me outta tight spots (damn i wish it'd give the readings for kanji when looking up english words).

Anyway, I think this will be good. Just gotta finish getting settled in. My apartment is still pretty bare, and I have enough space to do something interesting but I don't know what yet. My fridge is being delivered on Saturday, then I gotta go out and buy a range and probably at least a table. Thankfully I have a bed and lamp, and some wonderful neighbor with wireless internet.

Thanks for the advice.
