Hi, I'm a Canadian citizen and I'll be teaching in China this summer.
I'd like to visit Vietnam in August (Laos too). I'd also like drop-off my
resume at some schools in Vietnam while I'm there.
Can I get a tourist visa upon arrival or do I have to apply for one
in advance at a consulate/embassy?
Thanks,
Bounder

You best get a visa prior to your arrival.

I have worked in Vietnam for the last five years. Several times while coming through the airport I saw a booth that had a sign visa upon arrival. But many other times it was not there. The last time I flew in, March 2006 it was not there.

So, best get a visa before you arrive.

You have to get a visa before you go to Vietnam. Visas are not cheap, I paid about $50 X 4 people, so it can take a chunk out of your spending. You also need pictures as well.

happywithlife,

you have been in Vietnam for more than 5 years teaching? I have a US passport and a VK. Do you think they will let me stay that long teaching English there? I thought I heard or read somewhere that you can only stay max 3 years in Vietnam!

Yes, I lived in VN for five years, but I only taught for one year. I ran a couple of businesses most of the time I was there. I have never heard of a three year restriction and indeed do have friends that have constantly resided there since the mid-nineties.

If you live in Vietnam for a long while, you will eventually meet people (government/police officials) that can overcome almost all bureaucratic problems and any concerns regarding visas or residency permits become somewhat unimportant. It is the way the place works. So dont concern yourself with issues three or five years away, as by that time, you will undoubtedly be adequately connected.
