Arriving from Canada in mid August, from there it's on to Hailar, IM. Is it cheaper for me to buy the connecting flight once I'm in Beijing?

I dont think so.. Normally it would be, but its high season and even Chinese travel agents are quoting sky rocketing airprices. Want a realy good laugh? check out NWA.com and get a quote for round trip fares from Boston to Shanghai. Its something like $6,000 Yikes!

It might be cheaper.

I flew into beijing from canada recently, and bought a ticket to Dalian at the airport. They usually cost about 600rmb, sometimes more.

But I was pleasantly surprised that this one cost 440rmb.
You can try your luck. I wouldn't expect it to be more expensive.

For internal flights try going to www.elong.net there you can see flights, times and prices and even buy online with a credit card. many airlines now offer etickets in China.

I brought a connecting in New York on Elong and used my VISA card and it worked out well.

They also have an 800 number from the states if you want to talk to them.

I did some research on this and this is what I came up.

Beijing - Hailar through elong is a special order but if you email them, you should be able to obtain a price of around USD 125.00 -- in this particular case that is only a USD 40.00.

One thing that I will say is that prices on the Beijing - Hailar route have actually come down -- they used to be in the USD 250.00 neighbourhood.

Air China only flies between Beijing and Hailar several times a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, I think). Do not take a flight involving a change of planes or a layover as it will easily run USD 400.00.

Through www.expedia.com, this is the given price:

USD
162.73

11:40 am Depart Beijing (PEK)
Arrive Hailar (HLD) 1:40 pm Thu 17-Aug
Duration: 2hr 0mn Air China 1135 Nonstop flight

There is also a direct rail link between Beijing and Hailar. A Pullman-type private compartment in a closed compartment might run RMB 600.

All the best,

HFG
