Hi, my name is Phil and I am from Canada. I am teaching in GuangZhou, China(south) now and I want to go to Thailand and teach. I have been searching a lot on the internet unavailingly.
Do you know a good place I can visit on the net?
Thanks a huge lot!
Cheers!
Phil |

Further to what isanity wrote above;
I've noticed that job offers via internet to people living abroad
tend to be at the lower end of the salary spectrum from
schools that may be more desperate for teachers.
Of course it doesn't hurt to answer job ads and e-mail your CV;
you might get lucky and apply @ the right place at the right time.
Three years ago while I was in Russia, I e-mailed 40+ schools,
received roughly 7 replies, and ended up working for one of them,
but not until after I had met personally with the Director of the school.
Unlike China, Korea and Japan - where hiring over the internet is common,
Thailand, for whatever reason, seems to stand out as an exception to the rule.

Q6: I've E-mailed my CV to 30+ schools, but so far no reply. What's the deal? Do I smell bad?
A6: No, you (probably) smell just fine.
The TEFL market in Thailand is a bit unique to the extent that there are already several thousand expats living here and available to interview on short notice. Because of this, many school managers don't bother answering applications from people living abroad, or they might tell you to "drop by for an interview" after you arrive.
i.e., Manager "X" advertises a position today, and by next week, he may have several hundred applications on his desk from TEFLers already in Thailand. Until you're on the ground here, Manager "X" figures he's wasting time on you, to put it bluntly.
With that in mind: your best chance of landing the ideal TEFL position is to be here, in Thailand, with a mobile phone on your belt, an updated CV in your hand, looking sharp & ready to hit the pavement. If you can arrange a few interviews and/or set up some appointments via E-mail before arriving, so much the better, but don't be too disappointed if you don't receive that great job offer over the internet.

I assume you have an internationally recognized TEFL. If you haven't, but have experience make sure you've got documentary evidence of a teaching history. Do the Chinese have a contract culture? If so, keep them. They are your evidence, and if necessary, you should be able to get them translated into Thai (once in Thailand). But if you do have a TEFL, don't worry!
There's a shortage of both experienced and inexperienced teachers in Thailand at the moment, so you can participate in the 'sellers market' to your advantage. Just buy a one-way ticket and go for it! |

There is, as stated above, a shortage of teachers at the moment. Even though school has started - quite a few positions continue unfilled.
But . . . as also mentioned - Thailand tends to hire locally. |
