Hi everyone. I may have screwed up my reputation with GEOS and I haven't even started the job yet!! I accepted a position with GEOS and had sent in the signed contract and my visa documents to their head office, but just when I left the post office I remembered that I was supposed to send the documents by courier not regular mail. I feel really stupid because they specifically said that I had to send it via courrier and they even reminded me over the phone when I accepted the position--do you think they will hold a grudge about this? I haven't even confronted them or have confirmed if they received the documents yet. I think they are going to be PISSED at me--do you think this will negatively affect my placement or how they treat me in the company??

I don't think anyone here can give you a definite answer. If I were you, I would call the post office you mailed it from. If they sent it out already, they likely sent it to a central distribution point in the area, which you can ask the contact info for. I know this because I recently had to have an express mail package returned. After calling a bunch of numbers, I caught it right before it left the city. Of course, that was with express mail, which is much easier for them search through.

Hopefully you'll find out what unforgiving jerks they can be just because they want you to pay extra for courier because they're too slow to get employees when needed or more likely because someone left early due to shoddy work conditions. Don't sweat it.

PS you arent going anywhere without a visa stamp in your passport anyway and it takes a couple of weeks to get your visa processed anyway. An extra few days wont make a difference. I wouldnt sweat it if I were you.

Speaking of work visas. If someone has one is it possible for the employer to cancel it?

If you can't get the post office to cancel the delivery, the best you can do is to call GEOS, take responsibility for your mistake, and give them the heads up that it'll arrive by mail. They'll likely be annoyed, but if they are a company worth working for, will get over it. Good luck.

NO.

They can withdraw sponsorship and you need to find another sponsor. The only people who can cancel or invalidate visas are immigration. The employer is simply sponsor of the visa.

I can't say for certain, but I don't think it will make them change their mind about hiring you. Just call them, admit to the mistake and apologize. In my experience the people at the hiring office were pretty cool.

The only way you can really sh-it in your own nest and get offside with the higher-ups or office is to get a visa and then do a runner at the airport when you get here, get arrested by the police, or start sleeping with your students.

Forgetting to send something by courier ranks fairly low on the seriously-stupid-thing-to-do category.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I was just sweating it a little since I am not familar with the work culture. I basically decided to let it go, but I will call them first thing on Monday and ask if they received the package. If they give me any lip I'll just "apologize" and say that I had my brother mail it something and he forgot. I wonder when they will tell me of my placement!

I really think you'll have a better chance of getting a good reaction if you call them before they discover it, and apologize. And don't tell them some story about your brother... that's going to make you sound really irresponsible. Just tell them the truth.

Well well, who would have thought working in Japan could be so fun?

Anyways, I just got off the phone with GEOS and they just received my package TODAY! Damn, they are quite slow with this process. They have to translate everything and then ship it off to HQ in Japan. I apologized for sending it by regular mail and they seemed like they didn't even care. PHEW! I'm glad that's over!

Hopefully, there won't be any more screw ups! But I guess we'll see--it depends on whether or not I get any cute hunnies in my classes!! J/K haha...
