There is a lot of press here regarding Japan's (now failed) attempt to re-intoduce commercial whaling.

There has been at least one newspaper article here, by a Japanese, saying that there is virtually no coverage in Japan. Is this true?

Do you honestly expect the Japanese media to print anything other than the government line?

Japanese already know that other countries are against whaling here and that its only a small powerful interest group that wants to keep its industry alive, just like rice farmers. There are jobs here at stake, after all.

Just asking Shocked

Didn't realise the Japanese media was so tightly controlled. Maybe it has more in common with its North Korean neighbours than I thought.......

And wouldn't the 'govt line' be "look at these bludy (sic) gaijin telling us what to do?".......hence my original question!

If you have been reading the papers you would realise its nothing but politics. japan needs the votes on the IWC to get the whaling ban overturned so they buy off small developing countries like Tonga and Madagascar to get their votes. Its not censorship like North Korea but the newspapers censor themselves and there is no in depth muckraking like you find in the New York Times.

The large newspapers in Japan (Yomiuri, Asahi, Mainichi) print whatever the government wants them to know through the 'kisha' press clubs. being kicked out of the kisha is the equivalent of being exiled to Siberia.

The government knows the IWC and anti-whaling lobbies are annoying so they just play dirty by paying off other small countries.

Actually, they might have more in common with Australia according to the latest index of press freedom from Reporters Without Borders.

Australia ranks 41 with Japan just behind at 42. At least we give them a good hiding when it comes to the important stuff.

Like football.

I've tried whale. You can get it at the "hana no mai" izakaya chain. I didn't find it to be rubbery at all. It was very tender, softer even than marbled beef.

Oh yes, i think there are two kinds. One is like you had and the other is yellow and rubbery and an old obaasan bought it for me in an izaakaya. I told her I didn't like it and she got angry. Evil or Very Mad

Not only the best avatar but also the best joke!

I tried it at a yakitori place once, they had special 'whale bacon bits', didn't taste of anything much. Think I've also accidently bought it as sashimi from the supermarket.

I saw some whale steaks in super tamade a few weeks ago.

Before that I thought you could only get whale from dodgy izakayas etc.
