where is a good place in the country of Mexico to buy those wonderful hammocks some of y'all ESL teachers sleep in?

any cities better than others? seems someone told me Oaxaca but not sure

are there any stores in Mexico City to buy the really good, sturdy ones to sleep in? ESL teachers need their sleep, ya know!

Yucatan!

But don't buy the cheap tourist hammocks sold on the streets here. They're not comfortable and don't last long.

What would you expect to pay for one of the good hammocks, Ben?

I paid 400 pesos for the one I have now, which I had a friend custom make for me about a year ago. It's the big family size, well made with a style of weave that's tight but still has "give" to it, and I chose the thread colors I wanted. Even with regular washings, it should last for several years. Similar ones of good quality can often be had for a little less money from the mestizas who occasionally come through the neighborhoods selling hammocks, but sometimes the colors or color combos are a bit unusual.

I slept in a hammock at Tulum one night, it was a horrible experience. It would have been more comfortable on the floor with a rock for a pillow.

Isn't that kind of like saying I slept in a bed with a lumpy mattress one night, and it was a horrible experience. It would have been more comfortable on the floor with a rock for a pillow? Not all hammocks are the same. I once bought a hammock that was too narrow for me and kept waking up during the night with either my head or my legs from the knees down hanging out of the hammock. Definitely uncomfortable. I'm over 6' tall. I gave it to one of my chaparro housemates, and it worked fine for him.

If a person isn't accustomed to sleeping in a hammock, it usually takes 2 or 3 nights to adjust to it. Obviously, not everyone finds it comfortable to sleep in a hammock. I know lots of people here, locals and transplants alike, who prefer to sleep in beds instead of hammocks.

Merida is a great place to buy hammocks, I have two from there, one was bought in 1990 and is in great shape, but its at my parents house and "wintered" every year. The other has really faded, but has been left out in the Mixtecan sun a little too often. You can get good ones other places, some good ones are made on the Oaxacan coast. Also in inmates in several prisions in the state of Oaxaca make extrodinary hammocks!
