I just wanted to clarify, as so many have taken exception to my previous post. I don't, as a rule, use translation in class. And what I should have witten as an introduction to my little scenario was something like," here is a situation where one might possibly consider using translation."
I was trying to illustrate, (however badly that it came across) a situation where the student's level of English was obviously too low to understand any kind of explanation I could have given. (not that I couldn't have expounded for hours on the meaning of should) The class is still working on the past simple tense and basic sentence structure. They really are not ready to discuss or comprehend modal verbs. The question came up, after I had read the story, "Put Me In The Zoo" to them. Unfortunately, this story uses the word "should" quite a bit and I hadn't thought enough about how to teach that word to them.
So my apologies to all of you whose feathers I have ruffled.
I will have to be more careful about what I post in the future.

Why apologize? This has been a fascinating thread--lots of debate. Thank you for prompting it.
