It has just been reported to Thrifty that a certain language school in Şirinevler offered to employ a young woman who was brought up in the UK and has a degree and CELTA but as she has a Turkish name, she was told to change it.

She refused the job.

Good for her! I think the name changing thing is crap. Why do you have to pretend to be someone you're not? Pretend not to speak Turkish when you do?

Schools argue it has to do with students complaining. It's about time Turkish students and the schools grew up and accepted it's a big world and not everyone fits perfectly into what you want them to be.

If we are thinking of the same school, they must be desperate, there was a big turnover there last week....

Same school. As you know 4 teachers went last week. 2 were sacked and 2 walked out. One of them was the acting head teacher.

That place never learns. Evil or Very Mad

Voldermort (may have spelled it wrong) is the evil guy in the Harry Potter series. Non of the characters are permitted to say his name. He is the one-who-shall-not-be-named.

When 'Some' schools advertise to recruit students they tend to stress that 'all' there teachers are native. Therefore, if they have teachers on board who have non-native names, students will question whether or not they are native. This is the only reason name changing is required and it has nothing to do with students wanting to speak to the teacher with a Turkish name in Turkish. I know Native speakers with Turkish Names who can hardly speak Turkish anyway!

It leaves me wondering how many non-native teachers are employed and then forced to change their name, therefore blatantly lying to the students!!!

might it be a certain school that likes to Phone Home and is featured on the Thrifty fable thread? Twisted Evil

on another note, this refusal to employ people with non-Anglo sounding names is nothing new, nor is the practice of not employing non-whites where possible. Mad

I find the whole thing a bit weird really. I think l might extend this whole prejudice thing a bit further.......Have you guys noticed that most of the tv ads relating to the Turkish family or children mostly use actors who look very arian or at least have light skin and blue eyes. I find it rather disturbing really.....it's a bit like Michael Jackson's bleaching his skin white.

Well, Turkish Reklamistan is a weird place - the art work often looks strangely Socialist-Realist. Have you seen the newspaper ad for Turkish Airways?
