My avatar is in fact a credible likeness of myself. Except I don't have so many legs.

What about "handsome" to describe a woman? I've long been partial to this use but I suspect it's old=fashioned...

I've seen handsome used to describe women. Personally, I'm not too fond of it and might bristle if anyone described me as "handsome." It lacks the sensuality/sexuality of the more "feminine" words, I think. What about a pretty boy (not "prettyboy") or a beautiful man? Physically possible, of course, but strange connotations.

My Chinese charges teach me that men are (with a little luck, that is) HANDSOME, and women (always!) are BEAUTIFUL.

But, I can make a handsome amount of dough. I have never heard anyone saying "a beautiful income".

I look exactly like my avatar, except I'm not filled wth carbonated fruity sugar water. O, and I have arms and legs.

I like the term 'handsome' for a woman because it denotes a strength in the beauty. Katherine Hepburn was handsome. Juliette Binoche is beautiful. Claudia Schiffer is pretty. My cat and many of my students are cute.
