The idea of teaching English in an interesting country where life is so good that it makes up for a low salary really speaks to the romantic in me- but not to the pragmatist.

I grew up really poor- studied for me corresondence degree by candlelight and worked by day- and I know how poverty can break a heart as much as build a character. Well, my character has been built and my heart has been broken, and now I consider it my duty to make do in the material world. I would not accept a job for which I am underpaid. Way better to get paid well for doing an honest day's work and do some volunteering to give something back.

Yes, but only for a 4-working-week (5 days/wk) summer job I did 12 months ago in Wuhan, China. The employer initially said that I would be paid 5,000 RMB for 25 teaching hours per week. That worked out at a miserly 50 RMB/hr, so I said no and demanded more.

I was then told that I would be paid 6,000 RMB for the same hours. That worked out at 60 RMB/hr, still miserly, so I still said no and demanded more.

I was then told the final offer: 7,000 RMB for only 20 teaching hours per working week for four weeks. That worked out at 87.5 RMB/hr, an improvement of 75% on my first "offer".

I accepted, I did the job and got paid the 7,000 RMB in cash literally within minutes of my last lesson.

I only this did because, for one month last summer, I technically had no full-time job, since my part-time (80% full-time equivalent) job had ended on 15 July and my full-time job with the same employer was not due to start until 16 August, so I basically had to plug the 32-day gap!

No need for me to repeat myself this summer as I am paid for all 12 months under my contract, even though I only work 9. I will be continuing with this same employer from next month for another year.

Happy holidays! Very Happy
