Hello all,

I am in China and trying to find work. I have been corresponding with a few schools, and the best I have seen so far is for a school in Suzhou, about 14 hours a week/6000 RNB a month. However, plane fare at the end of the six month contract is not included, and I will be living with the woman who is offering me the job.

I taught here for a summer session, and I have several years of experience in other countries besides. Native speaker, etc. So, is that a good offer? Or shoud l continue looking around?

Jay

The rate per hour, a bit over a hundred, is pretty good. Accommodation doesn't sound right, and could be awkward. Most often there'd be a one-way airfare, but as the salary's better than usual, you be the judge.

i'd recommend you to look around Smile cause 6,000 for 14 hours a week should include all the other benefits even if you are staying only for 6 months [it should be at least half of your round-trip to/fro china], accomodation should be either spare with another foreign teacher or you should stay in a separate place with number of facilities... plus your visa.
as it was said, if you get hourly paid job, you'd be getting more, definately, and in that case they wont pay for your anything but you can easily manage yourself. the only problem which might occure is visa Smile

And does the hirer offer you a work visa for those six months? That will set her back another 1000 to 1500 RMB for six months! If not - are you going to buy a six month visa in HK? At your cost?

Suzhou is a great town and the salary you list is adequate...not exceptional.
However, the bennies seem suspect and the housing arrangement stinks on ice. Walk away.
Suzhou is nice but it has some real lunatic schools.

Hello,

Thanks for the advice everyone! I felt a little sketched out by the housing thing, and the more I think about it, the more I would like to have airfare included. "Why sell myself short", I thought this morning as I ate my daily dumplings, "why, there are backpackers fresh outta Tech Univ commanding deals like that!" With that I decided to raise my standards! I certainly don't think I am being unreasonable...

I have a foreign experts visa that is good for another 9 months, so visa problems shouldn't come up.

If anyone knows of any good schools in Suzhou or even Hangzhou, I would be glad to hear about them - please pm me with that info.

Thanks again!!!!
