worst beach in mexico: playa bonita, campeche. an atrocity that still manages to attract families hellbent on having fun (in a parking lot, without any sand, next to brown water full of seaweed with a concrete wall serving as the beach).

I'll have to second that. Playa Bonita is where New Jersey meets Mexico. Amusing to hear the locals in Campeche tell you about how great it is. Campeche sucks.

I think everyone is on vacation, at the beach! Maybe when they get back you will have more responses.

I have two favorites. 1) in Quinta Roo, Akumal bay! Fabulous place.

If that is too far to go, 2) Lagunas de Chacaua, Oaxaca. But there are many great beaches on the Oaxacan coast, depending on what you're looking for, quiet, not quiet, surf, no surf, sunrise, sunset...

The beaches south of Playa del Carmen are the best I have seen in Mexico.

i really have almost no beach experience in mexico. but, people talk to me constantly about my need to get to more beaches, and from what i've heard they go like this:

best beaches in the universe: anything in quintana roo
second best beaches in the universe: anything in oaxaca
after that, you have assorted other good beaches on the pacific coast: zihuatanejo, puerto vallarte, the neglected chiapas coast, and bringing up the rear would be acapulco which is definitely a has-been as far as tourist spots go.
for a bad time, call: almost anywhere on the gulf coast. the only people who vacation there are already close by.

by the way, campeche itself, veracruz itself, those are really nice places for a visit, really interesting. just don't go for the beaches!

On a holiday to Playa del Carmen once, I read a diving brochure that said that Cozumel had been rated the second best coral reef in the world.

Guess where number one is? Laughing

The same people will also tell you that Mexico is the biggest country in the world.

someone recently told me mexico has 300,000,000 people and the US has one billion. i thought that was funny until i read an article stating that something like 30% of americans think the same thing.

for anyone who is curious, the US is just under 300M and mexico just over 100M. i'm not sure where the 10M illegal immigrants are counted though.

I recently read an article stating that the US's population is expected to pass 300 million in mid-October.

yes that was followed up by really really intelligent articles like "what race will the 300,000,000th baby be" and "where will it be born!?!?" surely google is tracking the exact number of each baby!

Hee hee. This makes me laugh. A few years ago, the newspapers in Australia were full of the amazing information that the 20 millionth Australian was due to be born. All of the people of my country fit into Mexico City, with some room to spare! Laughing

Maybe that's why the beaches are so good there Ms. Snorkle. Not so crowded. Wink

I'll be checking out some reefs in Colombia in the next few weeks. It'll be interesting to compare.
