My family is meeting me in Phuket in August for a holiday.
I have looked at some maps and it looks pretty far from the rest
of Thailand. How possible is a day trip to Cambodia or northwards towards
less touristy areas?
Thanks for any suggestions

Phuket as a base - is a pretty good idea. It is only about an hour from Bangkok by air and the budget carriers are pretty good deals. From there - nothing is much more than an hour away. (try www.one2go.com and www.bangkokair.com )
Think also the mainland - just off the island. And, not all of Phuket is "touristy". The northern beaches this time of year are almost deserted - think Nai Thon, Nai Yang, and Mai Khao beaches ( "Phuket's Best Beaches" http://phuketdelight.com/Best%20Beaches.htm "
North of Phuket is Khao Sok National Park and Khao Lak ("touristy but pretty neat! - http://khaolaklovers.com/) and to the south is Krabi and Koh Phi Phi, Trang and more.
Phuket would be an EXCELLENT base. |

I don't know your home country - so I can't tell you if you need a visa or not.
To the best of my knowledge - UK, Canada, USA, Australia - can stamp in without a pre-arranged visa. Other countries - can't be sure. |
