Someone has started an official petition to request that American TEFL teachers be eligible for a 1 year renewable visa in Europe. If you're interested in reading it here's the link:

the petition wrote:
As American English is rapidly becoming the language of business worldwide, the demand for native speakers to teach American English is also on the rise.

And this is the case for it? Are European/British English and American English no longer mutually understandable? Seems a bit lame to me.

I don't see any particular incentive for EU member countries to respond to this.

You think EU member states should just accept without question a sudden influx of Americans? If Americans were given this permission to work in Europe, wouldn't it only be fair for EU passport holders to have the same rights in the US? Is this a Bush idea? See a country/continent and invade it.

Long Way, I SAID that EU has little/no incentive to accept this. I absolutely think that the EU has NO REASON to even talk about the idea, regardless of whatever the shrubbery in the U.S. White House mightsay or not say.

Further, this administration has no real reason to follow up.

Basically, I think the petition has essentially a 0% chance of accomplishing anything at all.....

Was that clear enough?

The only way for something like this to be approved would be if one could prove that there are not enough native English speakers to teach in Europe.

Why would America want more ESL teachers? There is a slight difference. Only two countries in Europe speak English. I guess the real question is whether there are enough people in these two countries to teach English to the rest of Europe.

In Europe English is spoken in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Malta, Gibraltar, The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland--these countries are all part of the European Union. I don't think there's a shortage of native or near native speakers. Moreover, English is already fairly widely spoken in most European capital cities.

Why dont Bush quit tourist visas for Polish? Polish still have to apply for a darn visitor visa just to visit the darn country and you think EU are just going to make it easy for Americans to live and work in EU?
Ask Bush.

Bush will make his own 'EU' out of Canada, the USA and Mexico with the same kind of freedom of movement as the EU but not much freedom of anything else.

Different countries one state.

Judging by my Dutch friend there may not be a great call for native speaking teachers anyway at the school level - at least in Northern Europe. I couldn't believe she'd never been to the British Isles her English was so good. Once got on a bus in Sweden and the driver switched to really good English when he realised I didn't speak Swedish. (In the UK bus drivers often _don't_ speak English eg recently arrived from Poland!)
