Once got on a bus in Sweden and the driver switched to really good English when he realised I didn't speak Swedish. (In the UK bus drivers often _don't_ speak English eg recently arrived from Poland!)

I guess that it is hit or miss. I was in Brussels and no one seemed to be able to give me directions in English. Furthermore I have not met many Italians who could speak English well.

The questions is whether 60 million Brits plus the Irish can teach everyone in Europe. Well and add in the 400,000 Maltese.

I think you've missed my point that the non-native teachers of English are of such a high standard that importing foreign nationals is not a high priority, and where considered necessary easily met by other EU states.

edit PS: Why do think I'm in Italy.....
