Hello everyone...happy summer.

So, not sure if any of you remember my post back in March before I came to Japan, but it was regarding my girlfriend at that time. I'm here now, she's in America, and we've made it this far. She's coming in late August and as you know I definitely can't wait.

We're going to spend a little less than a week in Tokyo. I've spoken to my friends and relatives there, and I hear you can rent out "weekly mansions" which are furnished and cheap, day to day. I've searched a bit on the internet and have found some for as low as ~5,000 a day.

Any recommendations/comments/opinions/complaints/musings?

Also, I'm in the stage of planning it all out. Based on my own research, plus friends/relative's reccommendations, I want to take her to:
-Tokyo Disneyland
-Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku
-Clubs in Roppongi (Hills I think)
-Ueno Park (free English guided tour in and around there)
-perhaps take a day trip to Kamakura
-karaoke

Any other recommendations? Please let me know anything and everything, thanks!

Hi. How about taking your girlfriend to Tsukiji fish market. Do you like to eat fresh sushi? It's interesting just to walk around and see all the stuff going on even if you don't like raw fish. But you have to go early in the morning...very early. Harajuku on Sunday. You will see lots of INTERESTING people. Have fun.

Right on....I forgot about that one, the Fish Market. You're definitely right, I'm going to hit that up.

It's open on the weekdays so it works for us, except for the early in the morning part. But it should be well worth it. Arigatoo.

Oh...You should check, but I know that Tsukiji used to be closed on Mondays, I dont know if it still is. If you want to see the auctions, go early, but if not...you dont have to go that early. I always went on the first train out from Yokohama, and the auctions were always done. How about a sumo match? I dont know if there will be a match then, but that would be a good cultural thing. Have fun!

Don't forget the emperor's palace and garden, right by Tokyo station. Akihabara is okay too. Also, it's worth going to see a kabuki play in Ginza. You can see one of the three acts for cheap (maybe 4000 yen or so, I can't remember exactly). Act 2, when I went, was a bit under an hour long. It was cool. These places are all in the same area. Shinjuku and the other areas you mentions are there too. I think a couple of days in these parts of Tokyo will be enough to get a good overview. Three or four are better.

Nikko isn't far away either, if you have time.

Thanks to the people above who have posted.

But the main topic of this thread is about accomodations.

Any recommendations? Know of any good, centrally located cheap places?

Should I just search the net?

Thanks =).

As for accomodation, if you've found places for around 5,000 a night, you don't need any help.

As for places to visit, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya is a must do tour. I second the reccomendation to do it on Sunday. You've got to see the "cosuplay" people on the bridge to Meiji Shrine in Harajuku. I'm not a fan of Ueno. I'd skip Disneyland unless you enjoy waiting in line for 2 hours to go on one ride. Remember that August is summer vacation time. The Tsukiji auction is now closed to the public. You can still go there and have super fresh sushi, but you can't watch the auction.

Here's one thing I like to do when people visit me in Tokyo. Go to Asakusa. There's a very famous shrine and temple there just near the station. Look at that, then you can take a boat down the Sumida river to Odaiba. It's quite a scenic trip and quite cheap.

Whatever you do, enjoy!

The market is closed every other Wednesday, and I'm not sure their schedule, but don't plan on going that morning.

If you're going clubbing, go there in the early morning, as you'll need to take a taxi to see it all from the start. After go back to your 5000 Yen hotel (which is a steal, by the way) and sleep a few hours befoe getting back with the touring.

Have fun.

I stayed at the Yoyogi youth hostel, single rooms, shared facilities, 10-15 minutes walk to shinjuku/shibuya, about 10 minutes walk across the park to Harajuku. It's at the top left hand corner of Yoyogi park in the National Youth center complex. Cost me 3600 yen a night. No breakfast or anything, but easy enough to walk somewhere as mentioned above.

Meiji Shrine is in the park and is huge, spent some time hanging around there.
You can go to the 45th floor observatories in the north and south tower at the Tokyo metropolitan Government Building for free which is west of shinjuku station by about 10 minutes and has good views all around. 10 minutes walk from there to the Tokyo Opera City building and there on the 4th floor is a cool NTT Intercommunication Centre with some nice fun technology stuff to play around with, also free.
