I was just wondering what would be considered 'normal' or appropriate to wear to work to teach in Mexico???? |

| It's going to depend on the area and the school you teach in. If you mean Mexico City, it may be more formal that some other areas. The school you will be teaching at can give you that information because some schools ask you to wear a uniform. |

| A skirt or nice cotton pants and a blouse. Business-casual is always a good choice. |

| I thought that there might be some people who dresses very casually but I wasn't sure if that was the norm or not. I am a jeans and t-shirt girl so I was just wondering what type of clothing I should get to prepare. |

No, shorts and sandals definitely are not the norm in most schools. Think "office casual". As a woman you'll get away with dressing a lot more casually too. |

No tank tops? That's interesting, tank tops aren't a problem where I work. I guess unless it was a man wearing it. 
We can't wear shorts, or torn grungy looking things, but, this is a job after all. I don't think anyone should go to work looking like you just came in from working in the garden...
Lovea, I would also suggest you avoid very short skirts or low cut tops, you will draw enough attention from males without dressing like your looking to pick someone up.  |

I think it is more the spaghetti strap styled tank tops for women--and ANY tank top for men, the last thing the students need to see is a guy in a sweaty old wife-beater trying to teach them reported speech

At the university where I teach, the dress code for men teachers is much stricter than it is for women teachers. Women can get by with wearing just about anything: sandals, flip-flops, tank tops, strapless tops, short skirts, short tops with their tummy showing, etc. Jeans are quite common for both men and women teachers. Men can't wear shorts, sandals, flip-flops, or shirts without sleeves.
As for the comment about "the last thing the students need to see is a guy in a sweaty old wife-beater," why would you assume that all tank tops that men might wear would be sweaty old wife-beaters? A clean tank-top style shirt on a man would probably be a lot less distracting to students than a strapless top or a top showing cleavage down to the navel on a woman teacher.
Part of it may be cultural and part of it may be climate-related, but lots of women in this part of the country don't dress very conservatively. Many wear very tight, revealing outfits. Considering the shapes that some of them have, they probably shouldn't, but that's just my personal opinion. |

I appreciate your defense of the clean tank top shirt. Unfortunately, most of the tank top shirts that I have seen on men have been very unflattering. I look forward to having my frame of reference changed.
I think you have also raised a good point about distraction. It is just as important for women to dress appropriately for work. There are more options in what women can wear and I am from the school of thought that it is always safer to err on the conservative side.
What does your school do when someone violates the dress code?

Since there is no specific dress code for women, when they wear something that could be considered rather revealing, for example, other women teachers usually make catty comments behind their backs about their attire, and men teachers usually just look. In all fairness, I've never seen any women teachers show up for work in anything that was really out of line. (I'm still waiting.  ) In the 10 years that I've been working there, I've never seen any men teachers violate the dress code by showing up in Bermudas, flip-flops, tank tops, etc., so I don't know what would happen. Well, there are professors who come along with groups of exchange students from the States to teach some of their courses, but they're not expected to follow the dress code. Some of those profs dress more casually (Bermudas, sandals) than the "regular" men teachers are permitted to do. |
