Most so called "traveler's health care packages" are usually actually supplemental coverage. For example, will cover an emergency airlift to your home country, but what then? If you don't have insurance at home, where you could be bancrupted for life.

Does anyone have any advice on how they covered this? I am looking for a good high deductible or catastrophic health care package in the US to cover emergencies that would require being airlifted home (to the US) for care.
I also considered COBRA, but many HMOs have an exclusion for patients who have been outside of the home country for over a month or 2.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

It really depends on how long you plan on working overseas.

Personally, I DON'T want to be airlifted to the States and the medical care mess that is there. I live in Thailand - and the international hospitals here - I think - provide superior care to that back home - at a fraction of the price - and without all the arrogance that goes with medical stuff in the States. The two major international hospitals in Bangkok are where diplomats from all over Asia are sent for care - and you see people from as diverse places as Japan and the Middle East there - that came here for the excellent care.

There are many very good medical packages - some WAY overpriced - some quite reaonable - some almost cheap if you seek care in the part of the world where you are.

A discussion of Medical Care issues/insurance is at:

I use KW Batten - but there are links for other types of insurance and info there as well.
