Hi all:

Is it commonplace to have a clause in the contract that does not allow an employee to terminate his/her contract without paying an absurd amount of money (double hourly wage through the end of contract period).

I would have thought that with enough notice an employee should ahve the option to terminate without penalty.

Any comments?

Consider that the employer contracts with students and, should the teacher just quit, the school is at risk of being in default on the contracts with the students.

Plus, the school must pay in advance for work permits, etc. for teachers. Quite a bit of expense.

Hence, we try to put the word out on bad employers. At least, I hope so...

Some language schools do this. But it is largely toothless since very few could afford the legal bills that they would have to pay out to enforce it.

Not so much that. More the amount that they would need to pay the judge in the case as a bribe because such clauses are completely illegal under Polish law.
