Judging by the sheer amount of foreigners there you'd probably make more money teaching Spanish. Did you go in and ask for a job whilst you were there? This is the best way to get a job in Mexico if you don't have any contacts. |

I know two people who have worked at the university in Guanajuato, one with about your amount of experience and qualifications, one with less. Sorry I don't have any contacts, but just wanted to let you know its possible. I know that they both made considerably less there than they did at other university positions in other cities. |

There's a huge pay range for teaching EFL in this country. Some locations generally pay better than others. Even within the same city, wages can vary greatly from school to school.
These are probably things that most people are already aware of, but I think it's still worth mentioning as a reminder. There are several factors besides "how many pesos per hour" that one should consider: number of student contact hours, additional responsibilities, type and length of contract, type of medical insurace, vales de dispensa, prima vacacional, additional prestaciones, etc.
I've had newbies tell me, "At the private language school where I've just started working, I make twice as much per hour as you do at the university." Add it all up at the end of the year, and I'm pretty sure I still come out way ahead of most of them. |

Good point. Vacation pay is one big factor in a country with so many holidays, Christmas bonus, as well as other full-time perks such as grocery coupons that a friend of mine receives from her employer, add up. (I tease her and call them her food stamps). The bottom line really is what is included. |

I scoped out the job situation a little bit when I was in Guanajuato for three weeks in April 2006. I spoke with several teachers and a school director. One person told me that the university (Centro de Idioma) and UCEA (the business college) are the only schools in Guanajuato that will hire on long-term contracts and provide support to obtain an FM3 visa. The semesters start in August and January so you would want to start looking for a job (in person) at least a month in advance. Unfortunately, I do not know how many positions are available for non-mexican nationals or have any contact information. |
