hmm... there's a big difference between sandals and flip flops, and who the hell would go to ANY job in flip flops? i think they're horrific.
i'm wearing a tanktop as i write this, but i was at the gym a bit ago. the sweat has completely evaporated and i feel ready to teach!
when i taught in veracruz i always wanted to wear shorts but it was against the rules. the only one who got away with it was a really big guy, fat, and i think people felt sorry for him so they never said anything. he would be sweating no matter what he was wearing.
see, there's always a silver lining. |

Would it matter to you if the wife was young or does she have to be old? |

UMMM
CWC, I did not write that! Please read carefully and edit your posts before hitting post, that's what the preview button is for as you've pointed out to many others over the last year! |

| why would I want to buy a cheap pair of sandals when I can wear a nice pair of flip flops! Flip flops don't have to be cheap and plastic you know; they can be lovely and sparkly with lots of beads or in beautiful colours! It really annoys me when employers think that a grown adult can't decide for themselves what is appropriate for work and what isn't. I am good at choosing nice clothes and I don't need to be told what is smart and what isn't. |

Unfortunately, not everyone has good taste in what to wear and some pretty creative ensembles turn up in the work place especially in the warmer climates.
One of the schools I worked in specified "no flat shoes" (for women). That was a tough one, since heels (while normal for every occasion here including grocery shopping) are quite uncomfortable for those not used to wearing them except for evenings out! I was able to find dressy sandals with raised heels but many of my female colleagues wore the spiky kind! Yikes. |

The same could be said about costumes for carnival parades, but that wouldn't make them appropriate to wear to work . . . unless one's job was being a participant in carnival parades, of course.

I have to go along with Samantha on this one. Although most adults would probably wear suitable clothing to work, dress code or not, there are some adults who don't seem to realize what type of clothing is suitable for certain situations. Personally, I wouldn't like to work in a school that had an extremely strict dress code, but at the same time, I see nothing wrong with having certain guidelines regarding what's acceptable to wear at work. |

not allowing women to wear flat shoes for work is ridiculous!
I read an excellent story in the local paper where my parents live in the UK. A 13 year old boy was told that he couldn't wear shorts to school despite the hot weather so he turned up the next day in a skirt. That is the kind of creative thinking that means someone will go far in life.
Besides, if i want to dress up in a carnival costume for work why shouldn't I? How does that affect my teaching? Unless you are in someway offending one of your students due to cultural differences or having disgusting toenails or something, I don't see how what you wear is relevant.
I don't know why this annoys me so much. There are many more important things to get annoyed about but for some reason it does! I have very nice flip flops which are a hundred times nicer than many other types of shoes I have seen which would be accepted under a dress code. |

If you're asking questions like these, then there's probably no point in trying to answer them.
You win. Wear whatever you want. I think it would be great if you wore a carnival costume to teaching-job interviews as well. |

Well, people who won't emply someone because they wear flipflops to work are missing out on some great teachers.
If schools put more thought into important things like supporting new teachers, training and resources then I'm sure that there would be many more happy students regardless of the appearance of their teacher.
I've had many students that have been so happy so see me after having 4 or 5 different teachers in as many months, none of whom had ever thought teaching involved anything more than talking in English to the student, that I could have worn a bin liner for all they cared. The point is, I didn't.
This is a stupid argument anyway. I never wear anything even remotely unsuitable for work. I just think that as an intelligent adult I should be able to determine for myself what is suitable and what isn't. |

| Eloise, do you work in Mexico (or have you done?) If you are here, take a look at the Help Wanted ads some time. I suspect you won't appreciate some of those wordings either where often they are rather specific about gender, age and physical attractiveness. It takes time to get used to but it's not for us to say if it's right or wrong. It's just the way it is. |
