Nope, it`s for real. Been away from the internet for a few days since moving out of my apartment and into a hotel until my visa is finally ready in Tokyo tomorrow. I`d like to reiterate that I appreciate the warnings. It`s worth it to me now that it`s done, and obviously I should have spent more time investigating the true situation...I`d love a do-over, but...
The moral of the story here is that you just can`t go on assumptions alone...in my case, a vague idea that there was some sort of grace period accomodation given a simple explanation (for a Western `professional`). Dumb move, and I paid the cost in money and stress.
