I've just got my passport back, with an extension to the 'Period of Stay' (i.e. with a "new visa" in it), from Immigration, and was a bit miffed to see that I've lost over a week; every time I renewed before, I got a full year e.g. July 28th 2003 > July 28th 2004, but now I've only got until July 19th 2007.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea why? Sure, it's only a week, but even so... Confused

Not only that but I thought three years was auto these days.

The only time I ever got 3 years (or was it 2? Not just 1, at any rate) was when I renewed on JET. Ever since then I've only been given one-year extensions - maybe I don't earn enough. Could also be the fact that I don't keep every little detail about visa renewals, change of employer, colour of undies etc scrupulously up to date on the back of me trusty ol' ARC (I'd have run out of space years ago if I had).

I got my first 3-year visa last year...after 6 years of one-year visas. I felt a little odd not having to go to immigration this July.

Fluffyhamster, are you a woman? I (man) have gotten 3-year extensions both times I applied. My friend (woman), been here longer, better jobs, etc. has always gotten one-year extensions. Last time someone actually asked her why she wasn't married. Could it be a gender thing?

I'm female, and I'm nearing the end of my second 3 year visa, so I'm going to guess it's not gender-related.

On my application my company checked the box requesting a 3 year visa extension yet when I got it back it was only for a year. Seems there is no ryhme or reason to who gets a 3 year and who doesnt.

I think it also has a bit to do with what your visa sponsor requests. If they ask only for a 1 year visa, you are probably going to get 1 year.

I asked my employer to request a 3 year visa after my second 1 year visa renewal, and I got the 3 year.

Get this one:-

I needed to renew my 1 yr spouse visa in Japan in 04 but knew I was leaving Japan permanently a couple of months later. The wife told them that (in Japanese) when we went in to apply and that a 1 year visa would be fine. You guessed it...when we picked it up we got a 3 yr visa valid to 2007............ Rolling Eyes
