These kinds of things can be a real pain in the neck. Definitely go to www.forumosa.com as previously suggested to get more info. I would also suggest calling the motor vehicle department in Taipei (if you live outside of Taipei) to get more accurate information. From my experience in the southern part of Taiwan, most of the people who work in the motor vehicles department don't know their head from their ass and everything is "impossible." This defeatest attitude would have normally made me crazy, but I had already called Taipei and had accurate information...so I was armed when I walked into the DMV with information and my phone ready to call Taipei if they insisted that what I wanted to do was "impossible" again. It worked. |

| I got my scooter licence about two months ago. My ARC only had about six months left on it and as a result my licence is only valid for six months. I was informed, when I asked, that when I renew my ARC I can also renew my scooter licence without need to retest. All this was done in Taipei and I didn't have any trouble at all. It does feel weird though to ride your bike without your licence to their office and then ride away with your licence. |

Thanks for the personal feedback Ki. It seems that in Taipei they have realized how ridiculous the regulation was.
I look forward to hearing from Northwood and Wix as it seems that this is one of those things that can only be answered from experience. |

OK, as promised, I finally called them (Taipei Motor Vehicle Dept). This is what they told me:
| Quote: |
| 1. Exactly what length ARC does a foreigner need to have to apply for a scooter license? |
Answer: 12 months left on your ARC.
Yes, they know that the paperwork/application process for an ARC almost guarantees it won't have 12 months left on it before you get your hands on it. Yes, they understand this is a problem for many foreigners.

| 2. What are the rules re: scooter license renewal (if an ARC is extended and also after holding a license for 6 years)? |
Answer: Just apply for a new license. No need for a re-test.

| 3. Does each county in Taiwan have the same set of rules? |
Answer: Er, sorry, I forgot to ask. Maybe someone else can ask this. I think they've had enough of me for a while.
Hope this helps. |

The rules are in place. No question about that. My guess (after reading Ki's story) is that if you just go down there and fill out all the paperwork, they will turn a blind eye to the rules and let you take the test. |

| I got my motorbike licence today with a one year ARC that expires in mid-May next year. I was just renewing an old licence that expired several years ago. The process was very simple. I just handed over my old licence, ARC, two photos and NT$200 and got the new licence in a few minutes with no questions asked. This was at the office in Zhongshan Road, Zhonghe, Taipei County. |

I live in Fongyuan, just north of Taichung and have renewed my license twice, once in Taichung and once in Fongyuan. Both times I had less than a year left on my ARC, and both times had no problems. I guess it depends on a) whether the person behind the counter knows the regulation and b) more importantly, whether they want to enforce it. No doubt, it will be 3rd time unlucky as I have just changed schools and my new ARC will have different dates so need to update my license!!! |
