For me sending money home through the Japanese post office was much better than exchanging at home.

Once I took home 200,000 yen to be exchanged at a British post office. I received about 80 pounds less than I would have by going through the japanese post office, even thought the exchange rates were the same and the British post office is supposedly 'commision free'.

I stil have no idea why this should be the case.
