I'd like to get my Master's and am considering getting it at a Romanian University. Does anyone know schools that offer a Master's in TEFL?

How good is your Romanian ? The language of instruction and education at Romanian Universities is Romanian. Could you write your MA thesis in that language ?

I want to get a MA in TEFL, so I'm hoping the courses will be in English. It makes sense to me, when I studied Spanish, everything was in Spanish.

To answer your other question, I just applied for a position in Romania with the SOL group, but won't find out until May of next year whether I've been accepted. And I will post and let you all know.

Well I am sorry to tell you that the language of instruction and research in Romania is Romanian. Is that so strange ?

Yeah I think so, because if I were to study a language, I would expect to be studying that language.

English Philology (English Language and Literature) is studied at Romanian Universities through the medium of Romanian. I do not find this at all strange.

It seems to me that you are being naive expecting Romanian Universities to teach through the medium of English.

What you might be able to do is get a job at a university in Romania, and while doing that, learn Romanian to a high enough standard to study through the medium of that language.

The question then will be what credence do employers outside Romania give to a Master's degree from Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi or Constanta.
When you find yourself ten years down the line looking for a job in Arkansas, Manchester or Winnipeg, will the local school board recognise it ?
Romanaina is not difficult if you have competence in another Romance language. Start now !

International students have to prove good knowledge of the teaching language (Romanian, English, French or German). For the students who do not meet this criterion there are specialized departments where they can improve their language skills.

Usually, international students learn Romanian during the preparatory year. The candidates who speak Romanian can skip the preparatory year after having passed a test of Romanian language. The candidates, who can formally prove that they have studied in Romanian for at least four years consecutively, do not need to pass the Romanian language test or to attend the preparatory year.

The following universities organize the preparatory year:
1. "Politehnica" University of Bucharest;
2. University of Bucharest;
3. University of Bacau;
4. "Babes-Bolyai" University of Cluj;
5. "Ovidius" University of Constanta;
6. University of Craiova;
7. "Al. I. Cuza" University of Iasi;
8. University of Pitesti;
9. "Oil and Gas" University of Ploiesti;
10. West University of Timisoara.

Students will have to take language tests, during the academic year, in order to check their speaking and writing abilities.

Since 1998, Romanian universities have introduced the ETCS (European Transfer Credit System) which facilitates student mobility within the European universities.

I think you will find on closer examination that courses taught through a language other than Romanian are scientific or technical. As far as I know there are no universities in Romania or Bulgaria offereing courses in TESOL or Foreign Language Pedagogy through the medium of English.

I am not trying to be awkward just pointing that the expectation that you can do an American-style MA in TESOL in Romania is not realistic !

In Romania as in Bulgaria and the other countries in the former warsaw Pact, Philology is what you study, not TESOL !

Mike2003 posts some information from an unnamed source. I am sure that some of these programmes are still running. From the 1960's onwards, Romania and the other socialist countries gave scholarships to students from the so-called "Developing Wporld" to study in Romania. These scholarships were almost exclusively for Science, Engineering and Medicine.

For those foreign students who were accepted study of Romanian was the task of Year One. Then they went on to study through the medium of Romanian.

The scholarships may have gone but some of these programmes stil exist.

As far as I know there are no programmes in Second Language Pedagogy taught through the medium of English.

There are summer courses run in various universities where you can study Romanian.

Sorry, should have stated the source. It is from the website for the Minister of Education and Research.

Wrong, English Language and Literature at Romanian Universities is studied in English. ALL courses are in English. Believe me, I did my BA in English Language and Literature in Romania.

As for the MA programs - ALL English related MAs are taught solely in English

As they should be, if you are going to learn a language, the courses should be taught in that language. So it looks like I may be able to get my Master's in Romania . . . .
