I was cleaning out a few old things today and found my IH Poland guide.I received this prior to working for IH Bydgoszcz in 96.Under the section clothing it stated;'clothes can be expensive and it would be unrealistic to buy them on your salary'.Aren't clothes a basic need?
Funny thing is they are only paying 1,500zl a month now. What was I thinking of back then? |

hi there,
i guess clothes are expensive in poland if you're looking for western brands but there are plenty of polish brands which should be affordable on a teachers salary, big star for example. but i understand from what polish teachers tell me, teachers salaries were quite good prior to 2000 compared to today. perhaps ih dress code is the problem, pair of jeans and a t-shirt do me just fine.
i was considering approaching ih in krakow for work next year, i assumed they paid competitively given that their courses are the most expensive for students, if london is anything to go by. so i'm a little surprised to hear they only pay 1500zl pm, i get considerly more than that here in the less affluent south of the country, very odd.
do they pay according to experience?, is overpriced accomodation included?
or it could be amin costs, all these seminars and conferences they seem to attend, plus flying staff around the world to inspect/observe teaching practices in their associated schools. i would imagine a lot of cash gets piped back to HQ in piccadilly, but don't quote me on that.
i was a little put off by my experience in ih london as they seemed obssessed with observation, i don't mind being observed by superiors or less experienced teachers but i find it disrupts the class a little if there's a stranger sitting at the back making notes.
what are they like to work for in poland? it's all starting to look a little suspicious. |

Half the IH schools in Poland haven't paid their franchise fees for ages, in a few cases years, and since the school has to pay for inspections, that doesn't happen either.
IH are 'downsizing' because thay can no longer afford their head offices in London. School owners are catching on to the fact it's a scam and teachers are realising that other schools are just as good, but pay a living wage. |
