Sorry to hear your situation. I don't know if it will be too late. There are always no shows, or some schools which still don't have any acceptees as far as I know.

But, regards holding on one handed to the only rope left hanging from the abyss having gone all out of your way to offer your services while the HK folks dilly and dally behind is nothing new. It seems to be a cultural trait in the education sector. It's something I learnt, too, and I always make sure I have a back up plan in case plan A fails to materialize. Whip round some extra applications to other schools just in case.

you could browse through www.classifiedpost.com and see if the schools are hiring. lots of schools place their ads for NETs here and lots of smaller-scale learning centres hire english teachers as well on a regular basis. good luck! Very Happy

Hey Wabbit,
I read somewhere that they will be hiring throughout the year and I know at least one person who has a later than normal start date.
Try not to worry, I have accepted an offer but things are far from sorted for me either! x

I have been in HK since the NET scheme started, and was one of the first primary NETs. I am sure that others will agree when I say that the EMB works very slowly and seemingly to a time frame of its own. It is very possible that you will get a call a few days before term starts or even after the term has started. I wouldn't give up hope by any means, but it may be wise to look at alternative jobs, even if you view them as only temporary. There are lots of agencies around that offer work which may pay the bills until a NET position comes up.

Wabbit, I understand you far to well. Only just a week ago did I receive word that I'd passed my interview and test. I'm still waiting on the qualification assessment. Ahhh....it sucks. I don't know what I'll do. Hang here in HK I guess and look for work. I don't want to go through the process of switching my visa over though if and when I do get hired as a NET. It would be nice to be placed in a public school even if not through NET Scheme starting in September, and then to get switched over later. But all that seems rather counterproductive, doesn't it?

oh man..... Gamma , try calling Fay in EMB to speed up the qualification assessment. Because we still have another hurdle of salary assessment after a school chooses us. 3 more weeks before summer ends, lets cross our fingers...Thanks guys for giving me positive advice.

I'm meeting with a company today that wants to put me in a public school. I'm sure they'll want to get the visa app going ASAP. But...is that the best thing for me? Of course I know I could switch my visa over, or even cancel it after this company has submitted my app., but I don't want to do that. I worry that I'll take this job and a week after I start, the EMB will get back to me and say they have a school for me. Then what? I may be out pay for my work, and I'll have to deal with disgruntled bosses etc.

I want a NET job before September! I am so poor now though, there's no way I can go another two months without working. I put in an email to Fay today, we'll see where that gets me. It was only two nights ago I got her, "Noted with thanks" email for confirming that I still want a job with them (a week after I sent it). What should I do?

dont email.... call fay 28916495

or phoebe mok for school allocation. ( qualification assessment) 28926492

sigh. i know exactly how you feel .in fact, i got myself a job in hk.... but seriously under paid. however i got the working visa....

after that, i managed to get a better paid one and still under paid.... but beggars cant be choosers, so i have to go through the resignation process one more time, transfer the visa by next week.....it is really tiring ...Sad and emotionally draining.

i do not know how long NETS will take. and i do not want to take my chances... i rather work and save up for this year before trying to apply again next year.

or you can try tutoring here too...to get by for time being...

Wabbit,
I think you're doing the smart thing. It is definitely good news that some NET Scheme teachers have later than average start dates. I think we still have a chance to get placed sometime this year, even if not in the near future. Also, do you know if the qualification assessment just checks out our degrees and certificates, or are they assessing if our qualifications are suited for the job? The reason I'm asking is because I'm a category IV candidate, wondering if that has anything to do with the hold-up. Also, I'm becoming paranoid after all this waiting!!

geese...

I did not know that candidates get placed in categories.. isnt that discrimination? ....

have you called Phoebe and bug her?

sigh, anyway, i accepted a job at a local school being a local teacher , thus having to go through the trouble of sending in my certs again to be exempted from the language proficiency test. how silly is that......
got placed at the lowest range of salary point w no housing allowance, but i guess still livable. ..have to make do and keep spirits up Smile

also hope other NETS are doing fine.....and not being short changed.
maybe NESTA can help...Smile

I sympathise with Wabbit but Im not sure that arriving in HK without a contract is such a good idea. Accommodation can be expensive when youre not getting a regular salary and housing allowance. There would be few schools which hire mid term, and as Poof says, there are always the no shows and a few people who might do a runner mid term or so.

As you are already here, you could ask Phoebe to give you an up to date list of schools needing NETS. Im not sure if this information is available for newbies but it is available for NETS staying on and wishing to change schools.

Be careful with some of the English centres. Many would not be prepared to sponsor you for a work visa and there have been unhappy teacher stories. I hope the school you did get works out. If you do get a NET offer, then you could always just chuck in the low paying job Id imagine if you got a NET offer theyd want you to start asap. I think you shouldnt give up hope yet. There is still time although as other posters say, the EMB is very slow and difficult to deal with.

Re the categories: yes teachers are classified according to their qualifications. See the information on the emb site. It sets out all the different qualifications. Obviously schools prefer properly qualified teachers.

Also if you get a visa for a learning centre and then get a NET offer you'll need to change sponsorship. The immigration department will want a very good reason for you changing your employer within, say, a couple of months of coming to H.K.
