I posted this in the Japan forum, but thought it wouldn't hurt to post here, too. The teacher forums don't seem to get a lot of traffic or responses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a change to the TOEIC this year. I'm going to be teaching a TOEIC prep class next semester for the first time, and although I have a couple of textbooks from the previous (Japanese) teacher in that class, I'd like to know a couple of things:

1. What do you use (and perhaps how) now?

2. What changes, if any, are you going to make to allow for the changes in TOEIC this year?

Thanks in advance.

I think the main change to the TOEIC is that the listening part is now 4 different accents (american, british, canadian and new zealand) instead of just one. The grammar and reading comprehension stayed the same so you can use the old books but if you are practicing the listening portion then your students need to be able to listen to and understand 4 different accents and you need the new CD.

Hi Glenski,

Am currently teaching a TOEIC prep course geared to old-style test still in use outside of Japan and Korea. There doesn't appear to be much useful TOEIC- specific material out there but if you are interested I could send a book list and typical week's outline lesson plans.

Used to do sample tests only with the only TOEIC student I had Glenski, six years ago. Poor guy couldn't even swing a greeting in English but was happy to do those darn things every Saturday, his idea. Got to the point where I didn't even bother with anything but a "howdy" and we'd start in.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Good luck,
s

Sorry for my ignorance but, how has TOEIC changed? When I used to teach it I had to use serious amounts of 'suspension of disbelief' before I could relate to the claim that it was the Test of English for International Communication. Apologies for the general cynicism regarding TOEIC and if you can tell me how it has changed I'll try to suggest some materials - I may not like the exam but that doesn't mean I can't help.

I use "Target Score" TOEIC Prep course from Cambrige. Copyright 2006.

Better to use only current materials. I upgrade every year to stay current.

Don't know about other countries, but in Japan here are the changes.

1. As of May 2006 there was a change in the design. Same number of points, some sections cut out, others lengthened.

2. As of December 2006 there will be a Speaking and Writing test, too, very much like the iBT TOEFL.
