Here goes nothin! Forgive the poetic license for my use of the word "never"!
What I don't get is, why are Japanese people these perfect specimens who never get sunburned, never get zits, pimples, never have any bodyhair, where most guys don't seem to be going bald (at least while they're that young).., where everyone is cute!?
How can you have a country where everyone is perfect! Doesn't it go against all the laws! |

I see lots of horrible looking Yamamba girls, I've seen fewer zits but more people with 'zit scarring', most foreigners don't go bald when they're young either and I've seen lots of girls (mostly too young still to shave or get laser stuff done) who have body hair. Kind of a silly thread. |

I think it's more obvious that many Japanese don't have much body hair (and some have a phobia about it, that is significant others having it)). As to zits, etc.., most young Japanese have pretty good skin, but yes, I have some students with awful acne, but generally they are in a minority compared to Europe.
As to guys going bald, it does happen, I teach those guys (about the same percentage too as elsewhere)! |

OP that was the **$*$*@@$ thing I've ever read. How long have you been in Japan? - 1 hour? Did your plane land at a Hostess bar in Tokyo? Either you need to get your eyes checked or you are a really really REALLY bad judge of what is good looking.
Zits are lower because the amount of greesy food eaten is lower.
In Japan they have this thing called SPF 50 and SPF 75 sunblock - you should try it sometime.
Some people have bodyhair and some don't - or are all westerners harry backed freaks? It is true that a lesser percentage of Asian (not Japanese) people have body hair but this could be due to evolution if you believe in that stuff (not to say they are more evolved, but just like animals who evolve different in different regions - please don't turn this into an evolutionary debate since I care not for opinions on this matter. Half of them will probably state something not knowing what Darwin's books are even called).
Lot of bald dudes... Balding asian women are even commen sights. Asian people have much thinner hair then most compairing statistical norms.
I won't argue that a lot of cute Japanese women exist. But have you ever been to Russian? or anywhere else in the world for that matter? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Cute guys? They do seem to spend a lot of time on their hair so maybe...
You should really get glasses.... or stop going to Nomi Hodai. |

The sunburn factor I think is more a case of them fearing the sun. I've been amazed asking my students about "their worst case of sunburn" and so far not one has said they can remember getting sunburnt let alone a bad one.
Then I find out most of these people (mainly female) find the idea of a tan scary. They like white skin and don't want tans. So they avoid great expose to the sun at all costs.
I found this really strange because, being from Australia, sunburn is just all part of growing up in the sun.
As for the beauty issues, one theory on what makes beautiful people beautiful is the geometry of the face and, when it comes down to it, a lot of the Japanese (especially from the north) have very fine features. So I guess that's one theory.
With all that said though, I've seen lots of acne scars on adults, pimpled kids, hairy men and ugly people. It's like all societies. |

Greasy food has nothing at all to do with acne. Acne is caused by hormones affecting the skin's production of sebum, which clogs pores leading to infection by acne bacteria. Oily food has no bearing on it, unless you like to rub lard over your face...
But seriously, Japanese people, like most Asians, do tend to have softer smoother skin and clearer complexions simply because that's how they're genetically prone. There are many exceptions, but bottom line is they generally have nicer skin than we do, the same way they are generally slimmer and generally have less body hair. Call it luck.
And actually I agree there are a lot more fit, beautiful people in Japan than in most Western countries - though it's just my opinion. My guess is it has a lot to do with them taking good care of their bodies and grooming etc. plus a lot of them are just attractive to begin with. But feel free to disagree... |

Generally speaking, Japanese people, as with other Asian peoples, have more collagen in their skin.
Collagen keeps the skin supple and thus acts as a barrier to developing a lot of lines and wrinkles. This is why a significant number of (not all) Japanese have youthful looking faces even into their 50s and old age.
I'm not an adherent of the diet theory about their skin because for a long time now Japanese food, even 'natural' food has been laden with nasty preservatives and colours that are banned or at least have to be stringently labelled in other countries.
If you go into it (which I don't have time to do) you'll be shocked by just how artificial and unhealthy is much Japanese food. You don't need to eat junk food in Japan to be eating unhealthily.
The Japanese (and other Asians) also have their blood vessels hidden more below the surface. One of the reasons for flushed and damaged skin among whites is that their blood vessels are close to the surface. When I holiday in Oz, for example, I saw the effects of a lot of sun on women whose skin would be white in a climate like that of my home country.
Generally speaking, more hair on a human body denotes an origin in cold to very cold climes. Note that African descent people have little body hair unless they are of mixed ancestry like some African Americans who don't have so dark a complexion and are hairier than the average African descent person. Despite parts of Asia being very cold, much of Asia has semi-tropical climatic conditions.
However, remember that many Japanese women spend a lot of time and money on make up and hair removal. Seeing 40 plus women without their make up can be a revelation - more lines and wrinkles than you'd think.
I also think there's a tendency fo Japanese women to look more masculine the older they get, such as in their seventies and beyond.
And this isn't a jealous shot but according to a number of men I met in Japan including my Chinese husband, the average Japanese body can be a turn-off. A long body, low hung behind, and shorter than average stocky legs don't look very attractive when seen in swimwear or fully at hotsprings.
There also seems to be a discrepancy between any no of Jp people's heads and their body size. Looking at picturesof the Prime Minister who will go down as an abject failure by history, Koizumi looks bloody awful with his over-sized head and short legs. For that reason I didn't find many Japanese men's bodies very attractive - they tended to
look out of proportion to the point of looking a bit deformed.
Again these are my opinions but I don't think they're invalid. |

I was at Enoshima beach this week, and I saw hundreds of sunburnt Japanese people. Possibly they recover from it faster than lighter-skinned people. Definitely Tokyo people spend less time outdoors than your average Kiwi or Aussie, so are much less likely to have had a bad burn.
I don't see any difference in the rate of adult acne at least in Japan and other countries. Possibly Japanese women wear more makeup to cover it than many Western women. Since I'm an exercise teacher I see a lot more Japanese women without makeup on than most, and plenty have acne and/or scars. Acne has nothing to do with greasy food- I'm a vegetarian and don't eat fried food at all and I still get breakouts.
SPF 50 and 75 contain high levels of irritant chemicals, and SPFs above 30 are thought to have little added benefit by people who study those things.
Just go and sit outside a suburban station for an hour (not Ginza or Harajuku where people tend to be dressed up to the nines) and you will see beautiful, ugly, fat, thin, bald, hairy and everything else that's normal.
Japanese people (and East Asians in general) are genetically smaller and less hairy than many other peoples though, certainly. If that conforms to your idea of beauty then you will find them beautiful.

good question. I was actually pondering this...We live in the married student housing at my college (Louisiana State University) and there are LOTS of foreigners here. Almost every single one of them have "wonky" (your word was to funny not to steal) teeth. Are orthodonists not as popular in other countries as they are in America?
by the way rolling stone, you made me LOL if you know what I am saying... |
