I worked for the University of Piura for two years, I just finished in July. I signed a contract with them, then cancelled it three days later for personal reasons.I was told that with a phone call, my visa could be cancelled easily. It wasn't.
On top of that, I was just told I have to leave the country at the end of this month.
The person in charge has lied to the Minsterio de Relaciones Exteriores, claiming that I work for another school and have signed acontract with them, neither which is true.
So I haven't had my passport for two months, can't even get money out of the bank, can't do anything. I still don't have my passport and leave the country in one week.
This is the first time this has happened. Another girl, had it take 8 MONTHS to get a volunteer, visa. THey don't even get you WORK visas, because they don't want to pay the fee.
Another girl, just had her visa denied because they were incompetant to do the paperwork.
So, just a heads-up. It's a decent place to work, but visa -wise it's horrible. More info, PM me.

Speaking of no respect, I applied for a job there a year or so ago. I was asked a number of very personal questions, to which I replied that I was not willing to answer them because of their unconnectedness to my teaching ability. The person who I was emailing was very rude about it and demanded to know the answers, and also demanded that I decide immediately about the job without giving me any information about the school or why they were asking me such personal questions.
I told them thank you, but no thank you, and withdrew my application. It was only some time later that I found out the University is Opus Dei. If that had been explained to me at the same time as being asked all of these questions I would have been more understanding of why they were asked. Frankly, the manner of the person doing the hiring was highly disrespectful and arrogant, which made me wonder what they would be like to deal with on a day to day basis. |

Sorry to hear the bad news, naturegirl. After viewing the website I wondered if the Opus Dei affiliation came into play in regards to the scrutiny they give their staff. Now I guess I have my answer. |

Hmm, I know who you are talking about, the woman who interviewed you. She might ask you if you are gay, honestly, I've heard of it. I was interviewed by a guy, I'm now good friends with him and his wife.
Just be careful of the University of Piura. |

Well, the lastest is that I got a call last night asking me to leave the country soon, so I wouldn't have problems.
I said I would love to but I have no passport. Then they claimed that they didn't know that.
So I'm still waiting for my passport. |

Sorry to hear about all this, Naturgirl. I know you've been (reasonably) happy there for a while. But it sounds like the pits administration/visa wise-
I also sent an application there, quite a while ago. The person who corresponded with me asked some personal questions, to which I responded: "Does it matter?" She said yes- I said, no thanks.
Shame, because academically, it sounds like an alright place to be...
Best,
Justin |

Well isn't this just a happy little Piura family?
My application got nowhere, largely, I suspect, because making a phone call to the U.S. was too technologically demanding and financially exorbitant. Too bad because as anyone who knows me could attest, I'm an Opus Dei posterchild. |
