I haven't read a post from anyone who says they like living in Taipei. Do you? If so, why? If not, why not? I'm having 2nd thoughts about coming and this would be helpful. Thanks! -Drew

It's got everything I need and more. I couldn't think of a better place to live, given my circumstances. YMMV

Living in Taipei has its ups and downs, just like with any other place. Even though I personally loathe city life (I enjoyed living & working in Hualian much much better), Taipei has a certain goofy charm which I enjoy. There's always something interesting to do here, somewhere cool to go, awesome people to meet, etc. etc.

Plus I prefer to live above the mayhem by planting my overeducated butt up on Yangming Mountain. Most of my friends say I'm crazy to live "so far away" but I was raised in Siskiyou County, California.

Taipei's great! I eat a lot of local food, but sometimes I get a craving for a falafel, or fish & chips, or a really good curry, and I can find what I'm looking for! The traffic is pretty good. Taipei is a really big little city, or a really little big city. Either way you look at it, it's navigable. I swim in a nice, virtually empty, community pool almost every day, and I enjoy the company of a really good network of friends and colleagues, both foreign and local. I live in the suburbs, but the commute is reasonable. The air polllution is a lot worse in other capital cities in Asia, and Taipei is pretty safe. If you can get a good work schedule going here, which isn't impossible, you can live well, save mightily, and still have a great time. Be advised that it takes time and hard work to get that great work schedule, so if all you're interested in is fast lucre, you might be better off somewhere else.

You're welcome to check out Taiwanease.com, too. I'd say most of the Taipei residents that post there like the place a lot. Very Happy

Taipei does have an intoxicating pace that can be really exhilarating. Living on the outskirts is porbably your best bet, especially if you're near an MRT line.

I think Taipei is the most habitable city on Taiwan. It practically a different country from the rest of the island in many respects.
If you are coming to live on Taiwan, Taipei is the best place to start. One might compare it to Singapore and Malaysia in that leaving Taipei is like going from a developed modern city to a highly corrupt third world country. the difference being that Taipei and Taiwan are governed by a band of corrupt, racist criminals.

I hear you Aristotle, but, after living in 3 European countries and the U.S., I concluded that corruption is everywhere. It's just more visible in some places than in others.
