Since this has become a de facto oldies' memory lane thread, I wanted to share some disturbing (?) news I heard this weekend...
...which is that Yeşil cafe is due to be shut down, then torn down. The old Istasyon Cafe has been torn down, and supposedly Burger King is next. Apparently someone decided that row along the tracks is a historical area and they want to tear everything down to put something, uh, historical there, like a tea garden or whatever. Quite why they suddenly decided this now remains a mystery but that's Istanbul. My husband is, in his paranoid nationalistic way, certain it's all part of the grand religious plot to eliminate alcohol pockets.
Source of this news is the manager of the new Istasyon Cafe, formerly manager of the old one. Dunno how reliable he is.
If Yeşil is gone, what are all those B.Ky teachers gonna do? Last I was there, Evin seemed to have adopted a new code of hostility towards foreigners. But that was over a year ago.... |

| I was never the biggest fan of the Yesil - their beer came in piddling oversized wine glasses, and it was more expensive. I'm not sure I actually recovered from the closure of the Dilhan (the Fish Bar), then the Cicek... |
