Sadly, avoiding the Centro Historico in the DF. Last year I had a shady vacation in Acapulco, so my goal this year was to go to see the grita, but...
I hear that Coyoacan has a good celebration in the city, and Queretaro is good to get away too. Any other suggestions?
Saludos, Sami

All the delegational centers in the city throw some kind of affair. I spent last year's at Venustiano Carranza Delg...a lot of people, and the whole affair is mostly for kids. But, the mechanical bull was a blast and smashing confetti eggs on heads never gets tiresome. Coyoacan probably puts on a good show too.

But, I'm spending this one on the beach...

What day is it held? I'd heard the 17th, after the celebrations, what few celebrations would be held anyway.

I was toying with the idea of going as well. Maybe see if I can get myself elected as Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs, or something cool.

Since our local city hold is being held hostage by the APPO, (whom all appear to speak Trique...) my city is in the process of deciding what to do. They usually have the traditional grito with the mayor in that made-for-the-grito little balcony in the facade of the city hall on the 15th and a student parade on the 16th. The big deal is whether to just do the parade with only the private schools, or if the parents should get organized to have their kids march without the help of their teachers. There has been a suggestion made as well to get people to dress up in era costumes and do a reinactment of the battle of Huajuapan. Cool

Eitherway I will probably just spend it weeding my garden. Wink

What does that mean? Shocked

Selling cocktails with umbrellas in them under the table? Getting rid of people you don't like and making a lot of money at the same time by flinging them into La Quebrada and then collecting the tips on behalf of your "cliff divers"?

Sorry. But don't forget, I live in Colombia, and the word 'shady' conjures up all kinds of ideas! Cool

Oh, conjure up all of the ideas that you want! The thing is, the Lonely Planet does not always offer the best in travel advice. A charming hotel with hot water actually seemed to be a house of illicit activity with a grumpy porter- and cold water. One of the clubs suggested ended up being a meat market of 18 year old students of mine... there were just too many strange, sketchy things happening that weekend, so I came home early. I go a little more fresa now Rolling Eyes

I bet that was a little awkward Monday morning...

Acapulco has been sliding downhill for some time now...all the decent places are away from the city and the bay, out towards the airport.
