Im new to this forum, I've enjoyed reading the posts from those who have actually done it. I will be graduating next year with a Bachelors in Writing/english. I want the experience of teaching abroad, a professor told me about Costa Rica, as friends of his are teaching there. My concern is that I have a family. If it's difficult to get a work visa, should I abandon the idea of coming? My husband teaches music, do you think he could get a job? I have been told that they are family friendly, but it seems everyone I've read postings from are single. Am I looking at having to leave my family at home while I do this? |

I have looked into this as well, because we will be relocating in about 2 yrs. to a Spanish-speaking country, so I've been researching Costa Rica, among others. We have 2 kids who would be coming with us.
This looks like an option, albeit a remote (in terms of location) one:

From the information on the site, it looks like they want a multi-year commitment. One of the school newsletters shows a teacher couple with kids. Sounds like a fantastic place, but don't know if it will be an option for us, though - I need my own reliable, fast Internet connection to continue working freelance (husband is the teacher) and don't know if that is an option there. Plus we are city people, and it's remote. You could try contacting them, though. |

I'd be cautious about your choice coming to Costa Rica w/ a family. I'm a single guy and burly to boot and I've been a little scared walking around. There's alot of dark and creepy spots around here. I haven't heard anything about physical injury problems I've just heard of theft being a problem. If something happening like that to you or someone in your family it can be pretty upseting.
But...... in the perspective of the daytime in Costa Rica there's plenty of fun activities to do and it's crazy cheap to travel the county. Here's an example. A few days ago I did a 2 1/2 hour busride from San Jose to the northwest beach town of Jaco for $5; roundtrip. I stayed in a nice hotel for $12 per night and I bought beers for $2 each. Talk about having a good time!! |
