Don't talk about steak & kidney pies or I'll have to come over there and slap you! (For bringing up a food that I sorely miss from home and CAN'T GET in Japan)...

I always watch Food Network and they have this show about these guys who travel around to different resturants and then emphasize that ALL of the food that they showcase can be bought and shipped. I know I have seen several showing pies (although I am not sure if they will send it overseas, but you could check it out).
http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_rd/text/0,2857,FOOD_26716_48933,00.html
www.sweetiepies.com
click on one of the places on the map they show and it will tell you what resturants will send you their food (you have to go to the resturants website).
worth a try for yummy food |

Are you anywhere near a Costco? The Costco I use in Fukuoka has frozen chicken and mushroom pies. The box says "Aussie Pies", but then on the reverse says "made in USA"
If I was rating pies back in Blighty, I wouldn't put these ones near the top, but when you're pie-starved in Japan, they're not so bad at all. |

How does one cook a pie with no oven ?
I have never come accross anyone that owns the type of oven that you would find in every home back in the UK. |

Good question, I've never come across that kind of oven here either.
The ones I mentioned from costco are microwaveable, which obviously isn't as good, but, as I said, pie-starved beggars can't be choosers! |

Well John, why don't you run down to Yamadadenki and slap down for a spanking new oven and you can be in pie heaven! |

While on the topic of british food, where can one find good beans in the Tokyo area. In import stores I've only seen american baked beans. I'd like to get some heinz or bachelors beans. |

Well, I guess label me lucky but I DO have an oven -- it's a gas oven that runs on the same LP gas that my range uses. There are two nozzles -- one goes to my range the other to my oven.
Most modern Japanese ovens are electric convection ovens. I've never used one myself, but I've been told that if you learn how to use it properly, it's a wonderful thing to have and you can do anything that a conventional, old-fashioned oven can do.
FWIW, they run anywhere from 40,000 and up at any denki store (like Kojima or Yamada Denki). They are fairly small, but still large enough to make a medium-sized pizza or an 8-10lb turkey for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I've done all of the above in mine. The turkey pretty much fills up every inch of the oven -- it BARELY fits -- but at the end of the day it does fit.
This is one comfort of home that I am VERY happy to own. |

Australian barbecue...
Sausages nicely burned, and if one happens to fall off the barbecue into the dirt just pick it up and brush it off, chuck it back on, no-one will notice the difference. |
