Thanks a lot! |

A few years ago i saw in the Guardian an article about a teacher in Rabat who actually had thrown two students out the window. One got a concussion, the other hurt his leg. When she was taken into court and asked why she had done it, she replied, 'I told them to sit down and be quiet and they just wouldnt do it'
I used that article for several years on the first day of classes but have unfortunately misplaced it in one of my moves. Alas. |

Okay, then what about when Turkish parents threaten their kids with, 'If you don't stop that, I'll take your eyes out.' or 'I'll hang you up by your legs.' It seems needlessly frightening. It also seems to be teaching kids to not listen by giving them what are obviously empty threats. Unless, of course, they're Sibyll's mom... |

| My mother always threatened to sell me to the gypsies but they never took me. Is a threat empty if those who will carry out the punishment refuse to be involved? |

Hmm. Not if your mom tried good and hard and was asking for a reasonable price...
Once my mom threatened to give us to the police, and she even went to some nearby police to ask if they'd take us, but they got mad about the idea of parents instilling fear of police in their children so that didn't go over very well at all. Not so much an empty threat as a failed one. |

So Turkish parents are not the only ones who threaten their kids. . At least ''having your eyes taken out'' is more clear for the kid than ''being sold to the gypsies''. And kids in turkey never believe it because gypsies never have money
