I recently purchased an Apple Computer and Ipod.
I am currently on a Working Holiday Visa and was wondering if I can claim back the 7% tax on them. How does this work? Does the purchase have to be made within 30 days of leaving the country? Any comments are appreciated. Thanks. |

Probably should have had them knock the tax off at time of purchase, but could be wrong. Sorry, I am not really very helpful, am I?
Good luck,

Yeah, I probably should have but that would have been a little difficult considering I got 25% off the Laptop RRP and 15% off the Ipod RRP (friend works for Apple). |

So, mate gives you a terrific deal but charges you tax? Okay.
What is RRP? Sorry, not up on that either.
And what is the first track you enjoyed or programed or what ever,
if you don't mind my asking J? Just curious.
Enjoy,

The laptops RRP is 309,800 yen.
The ipods RRP is 42,800 yen.
I should have paid 352,600 yen but I only paid 270,600 yen. I guess that famous saying of "its not what you know, but WHO you know" really paid off. (Quite literally!!)
The first track I installed on my iPod was Bjork 'Human Behaviour'
The first website I visited funnily enough was ESL cafe. |

Would you mind telling me which ipod that is? ie what generation and what capacity? Just wondering as am off to Japan next week, and am thinking the old ipod would be cheaper there. Presumably other differences are just language related and can be set right by the click of a few buttons?
Cheers

It is the latest iPod that came out 2 days ago. I know it has 20 hours of battery life for songs and 6 hours for movies. Thats all i know. Its ALOT cheaper to buy in Japan compared to Australia. |

might be cheaper now but it certainly wasn't last year. i checked ipod nano 4 gb in australia, korea and japan in dec. last year. all were about the same, give or take a few yen/won/dollars.
i was quite surprised......you might want to check |

Yeah I looked and compared Aus with Japan and it worked out $30 - $50 cheaper in Japan.
Can anyone else help with the actual original question of the thread?
Is it possible to obtain the 5% tax back from Immigration when you leave the country?
A similar system is in place in Australia for the GST. |

You've now asked the question three times and you have had no responses so it does look like no one has any idea about this. All that I've heard on this matter is that you are supposed to show your passport at the time of purchase and that it is available to visitors of Japan only and not to residents. If this is the case then a Working Holiday Visa stamp in your passport may make you ineligible.
Why don't you go into Yodobashi Camera or whichever electrical store is closest to you and inquire yourself? Then you can post the information on the board to clarify things for all of us. |

I don't know about claiming BACK the tax -- I do know that Akihabara in Tokyo boasts many duty-free shops though. The process to follow for buying duty-free involves getting a little slip of paper stapled and stamped into your passport listing your purchases, and informing you that you must take the listed goods with you when you leave Japan. Therefore, I would presume to say, no you can't claim the tax back, as the Japanese authorities have absolutely no way of proving that the goods you purchased did actually get exported out of the country.
Furthermore, if you are going back to your own country, (WHV would indicate either Canada, Australia, NZ, UK, and a few others), you may be liable for any import duty and sales tax when you bring your electronics home. In the case of Canada, you MAY be liable for import duty AND/OR GST, even if an item is clearly "used" and not new.
Hope that helps.
P.S. A working holiday visa in my passport did NOT prevent me from buying duty-free in Akihabara. |

Jim, how would immigration know that these items were bought in Japan?
Also, I presume the duty-free prices in Akihabara are available to anyone not just those with foreign passports. Am I wrong? |
