But, my orginal point seems to be lost; how many illegal immigrants are going to be in a club?

I would opine probably none unless they are working there, so in that case just card the staff Rolling Eyes .

None of which you refer to. "Silly"; if you're going to raid a club frequented by foreigners, take an interpreter.
If you're learning English at school; LISTEN. If you aspire to be a salaryman you may have to deal with English speakers. Or do policemen realise at elementary school that they will never reach the dizzy heights of becoming a salaryman, and instead perfect their bicycle-riding skills in preperation for chasing gaijin?
"Naive". In a country where English is THE 2nd language, might be a good idea to learn a smattering.
"Illogical"; how so?

Canuck, you've been in Japan too long methinks.Take a step back and see the absurdity of conducting a raid and not have the nouse to take along an interpreter to try and achieve a quicker, but more thorough result without further antagonising 'guests' in the country you call home.....

The police did! Re-read the OP!

This is a false statement. English is NOT the second language of Japan.

There is only one official language of Japan: Japanese!

What? What percentage of salarymen do you think need English for work?

Sorry to kick a dead dog, but at what point were people not allowed to exit the premises? You said it was highly unorganized and I was just wondering if people were bailing when they saw what was going down.

Enjoy,

This shows that they weren't too keen on this withchunt and were probably proded into it by some local big wigs..

Good news when you've lost your gaijin card!! I know from experience...

Anyways, if not for English conversation, and, or displaying mutli-cultural tendencies, the Japanese police certainl yare good for dirrections.

They also have a wonderful minshuku room reservation service when you rollinto a small town after city hall is closed..

If it makes you feel any better, the local police around here are always getting into criminal trouble themselves or flouting traffic regulations all the while not really enforcing the law..

But they don't bother gaijin!

Furious..., English is the Official second language of Japan. I don't think this makes any difference in the argument, but is worth noting.

There is no second official language. There's just Japanese.

the article wrote:
There is only one official language spoken in Japan, which is of course Japanese. However, many Japanese are able to understand English to a certain extent since English is the foreign language that everyone must learn as part of compulsory education.

Here's an article, although dated, proposing English as a second official language:

http://www3.plala.or.jp/mig/english-uk.html

If you have some more information, I would like to see it. I asked a few Japanese people and they didn't think there was a second official language.

Canuck and Milky are being obtuse. I didn't use the word "official" anyway, but English is THE 2nd language in Japan. Semantics....

Then, as a second language, what do you mean? English isn't the second most spoken language in Japan.

.

Even though this is a 1995 census, it's obvious that these results still reflect what it is like today. English is NOT the 2nd language in Japan

King Kakipi,

Your point, if you had one, was completely lost on me. English is not the official second language, nor is it the second most spoken foreign language in Japan. It probably is the most marketed foreign language in Japan, a quick glance around any train station should make that clear (with ECC, Nova, Geos, and the rest fighting for prime real estate). It might also be the most important in a macro sense, but I'd say most Japanese in Japan can function quite fine without ever speaking a word. You said that salarymen and police SHOULD speak English because of the great likelihood that they'd need it. Can you explain why? Most Japanese salarymen and police have no contact with foreigners. Why do you feel it necessary for all of them to speak English.

What exactly was your point?

By the way, do you know what "obtuse" means?
Quote:
2 a : lacking sharpness or quickness of sensibility or intellect : INSENSITIVE, STUPID b : difficult to comprehend : not clear or precise in thought or expression

If anyone was lacking sharpness, clarity, or precision, I'd say it was you, not Canuck or Furious. First you incorrectly called English the 2nd language of Japan, then you cryptically called it the 2nd language although not official (what does this mean???), and from what I can tell none of this relates to your original point of why salarymen and police should study English (at the very least' you've failed to make an explicit connection).

This seems to be getting away from my question, which is more related to the OP's post, namely, what was the real purpose of the raid?
