I have been to almost every ESL website known to man and on them I always see (literally) over a thousand job positions for public school jobs in Taiwan, and I have a distinct feeling Taiwan will never really be able to fill any of these vacancies for this simple reason;

Why would anyone who has spent thousands of dollars to be taught and certified to be a teacher in their home country, go overseas to one of the most polluted islands in East Asia only for a thousand and change?

I mean, a bright person with only a Bachelors degree can go to either Japan (more culture) and Korea (more savings power) to teach in their public schools.

I mean....really.....If you look at what a mid-career teacher makes in New York and compare it to a teacher and Taipai, there is absolutely no comparison, honestly.

I think if Taiwan wants to get teachers to fill their vacancies, they can do 1 of 2 things;

1. Lower the bar to allow more people to teach there. But at the same time, possibly hire a consulting firm to train the teachers while on the job or encourage monthly teacher development meetings at the school level.

2. Allow for overseas Chinese (including those from the mainland who had lived overeas and speak English fluently) to teach in Taiwan, though this doesn't seem like a possibility

Lower the bar?? There are already too many people here that shouldn't go anywhere near children.

Heh! Very Happy

It would be just my luck. Quit my NT$66,000 per month university job here in Taiwan to grab a US$66,000 per year high school gig in New York --only to get sued by little Johnny & his parents for confiscating his guns & drugs.

Sure, go to class and become a Molitov cocktail in NYC! Zazm, are you sure you're on the same PLANET as everyone else?!?!?!? Houston is bad enough. That's why I'm going to the collegiate level. I'm fed up with punk brats whom believe I should give them a sliding grade just because of their skin color and they can talk "ghetto". There's more to teaching than just a paycheck. T.E.H. has the correct perspective on this one.

if the taiwanese weren't so snobbish they could have all the degreed english speaking teacher they needed. the PI is fullof folks with education degrees who speak standard enough english who would love to cross the water.

taiwan'll never have it. all good han know that darker skinned people are inherently dishonest and naturally subservient to the master, han race. sigh.

I totally agree. If anything, the bar needs to be raised. However, there are ways to do this and still have qualified teachers.
It is getting harder to just show up and teach in Taiwan. That's a good thing for everyone, especially the kids.

That is a fair point, but it's not going to happen anytime soon.
